The monastery in DC is the closest that some will get to visiting the Holy Land. The Monastery of Mount St. Sepulchre, designated a National Historic Site in 1991, has been a place of worship and pilgrimage for thousands of visitors since the church's dedication in 1899. Free tours are given daily of the catacombs, church, and gardens.

It was a beautiful day when we visited and toured the gardens. The visitor desk staffer was helpful and friendly and the tour guide knowledgeable and interesting. We toured the entire garden, including the lower grotto, the cemetery, and the vegetable garden. It was all lovely, even in the early fall. Afterward we didn't join the tour of the cathedral,... The monastery is amazing in its details and since I probably won’t be to the Holy Land any time soon it was interesting to get a sense of the sites without having to travel there. Although the church itself is beautiful, especially the scene of the Crucifixion, my favorite part was wondering through the gardens. Walking through the gardens was... More

I go to the Monastery every Christmas and Easter because of the beautiful decorations and the wonderful music. At Christmas the inside of the church is decorated and in the spring the entire Church and gardens are ablaze with color.

The monastery was beautiful and the tour was interesting. The tour takes 45 minutes and includes the cathedral and catacombs! Had no idea there were catacombs! Spend some time walking the groups including the grotto. The garden is amazing old growth with multiple spiritual and just plain beautiful stopping points. A bit hard to find without GPS mapping... But worth... More

It's definitely a bit of a commute from public transportation, but the site is amazing. The architecture inside and the garden is nothing short of stunning. Plus, the grottoes down below would satisfy any religion enthusiasts.

The grounds, catacombs, replica of the Holy Lands, tour, and tour guide were all excellent. Guided tours are offered. There was no fee, however, they accept donations following the tour to help to perpetuate the site. I would suggest 2 hours minimum in order to get an overview. Plan on more time - a minimum of 3 hours if you... More

Difficult to imagine that such a spiritual place exist in Washington DC. The Baroque style monastery is gorgeous, especially it's dome. The gardens are sublime. The Underground crypts and altars aRe beautiful faithful recreations of the holiest shrines in Christianity. Friar Mark, was a truly blessed vessel.

What a beautiful ornate church! It is inspiring just to sit there and admire the intricate carvings and designs. The various altars are amazing. The gardens a beautiful and peaceful. Was not such a fan of the catacombs but were interesting replicas of things found in the holy land. Definitely worth the trip, especially for those who live in the... More

This is a great place to just walk, rest, and think. They built the replicas of holy sites for those who could not make the pilgrimages to include a small sampling of the catacombs. The cloister and garden was the best for me as it is very peaceful and thought-provoking. The gift shop annoyed me a bit as it was... More
