The Georgetown location coulnd't be more peaceful

I literally sat along the canal every day. Its shaded and peaceful and you would never know there was a busy city just a block away.

To start the trip one of the crew in period clothing uses a pole to push the boat into the lock. Another crew member explains the how and why of the canal and locks. The boat is raised and the gates at the other end of the lock are opened. Two mukes are attached to the boat at yhis time... More

Nice to glide along the Potomac and be able to see almost all monuments, the Watergate and much more in a quite way ! No traffic and no noisy town around. Recommended for older adults as we'll and also much cheaper than the tourist bus!

I had high expectations about visiting the C &O canal and boat tour. I love old Canals. I never found the boat tour, but the found the canals. Is was somewhat scenic, a good diversion from the main shopping district. But, Not boat ride nor information center was to be found.

We had a very informative Park Service ranger give us the history of the canal as we went through the lock and down the canal for this one hour trip. The boat is pulled by mules just as it was in the 1800's. The Park is a great place to visit so be sure to leave enough time to take... More

If you are in the Georgetown area and don't want to walk on the crowded main drag, go a block away for a peaceful walk by the canal. The C&O National Park Office had a "closed indefinitely" sign, but there were information boards about the history of the canal and locks. There are no boat rides here and from everything... More

The canal boat in Georgetown is out of commission but The Mercer canal boat in nearby Potomac/Great Falls Maryland is alive and well. Pulled by mules and interpretive NPS crew operated. Stop in at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center for tickets and information. Well worth the trip!!

I'm not sure why previous reviewers were unable to ride the C&O Canal boat, but it's definitely up and running. It could have been budget cuts or lots of bad weather during that time of year. So plan to ride the C&O Canal boats. It's a lot of fun! The crew are very informative and make it seem like you're... More

We saw information about this mule drawn canal boat ride in several places including the 2012 Washington DC visitor's guide. We checked their website for operating times and days the tour runs several times, (even the day of our visit for directions)...only to find a sign saying they no longer operate due to safety concerns. We spent a considerable amount... More

Unfortunately due to budget cuts with the National Park Service they have let the general upkeep of the lock system and boats decline. However, the tow paths along side are beUtiful for walking or nice for jogging. The perfect quiet place for calm. Lots of young family's with strollers enjoying the natural beauty right in the heart of Georgetown..connected by... More
