One of the oldest and most scenic routes in the United States, the Midland Trail, or old U.S. Route 60, offers a delightful 119-mile journey across south central West Virginia. Outdoor enthusiasts head for the Greenbrier River Trail, which offers over 80 miles of well-marked hiking and biking paths. History buffs can stop off at any number of historic sites including the Old Stone House, a reminder of what life was like for the industrial pioneers.

We took a drive on Route 60 through the mountains and found it very beautiful. We really wanted to ride the Jet boats at Hawks Nest but they were only opened on the weekends and we arrived on a Monday, very disappointed. They open during...More

One of my favorite paths to take. My family lives outside the capital off the Midland Trail. You can truly see the character of WV, driving up and down roads like these. Going through places like Glasgow, seeing the numerous locks and coal mills directly...More

On Route 60, there are truly breathtaking views. The road, however, is as crooked as a barrel full of snakes. If you are prone to travel or motion sickness, be forewarned: Dramamine is a necessity! Also be aware that unless you are accustomed to driving...More

Driving east from Charleston you will pass through coal country, which is scenic in its own way. Then you drive along a very serpentine trail w/mountains and gorges/rivers on either side. A taste of this beautiful state.

We've driven sections of this on a couple of occasions, and it is worth the effort. Some particular highlights - the Mill Trail between Ansted and Hawk's Nest State Park is a great 4 mile round trip hike along a stream bursting with waterfalls; the...More

Good alternate to Int 64. Lots of small towns. Lots of curves! In need of repaving. If you're not pressed for time, this is your way to go.

My best friend and I took a day trip and drove the entire scenic trail. It was absolutely gorgeous. I love taking scenic drives and this is one of my favorites.

From Charleston, it takes a while to get away from industry but you will find a lot of interesting stops along the way. Beware the curves in the highway. Visit Fayetteville and travel south from there to see what mountain living is really like.

Breathtaking panoramic views, State Parks, waterfalls, dams, country stores. What more could you ask for? Highly recommended!
