Thoroughly enjoyed the visit
Mar 2021
My daughter and I visited the museum. Based on internet information and/or signage, we had the impression this museum was closed due to Covid. We were walking by this beautiful stately building and decided to walk up to the doorway...it was open and we went inside. This is when we found out the museum was open. We had a wonderful visit. This was enhanced by the fact we got to go to a real indoor museum after over a year of doing everything outdoors. The docent at the museum was friendly, helpful and gave great suggestions about what to view in the building. We viewed all the exhibits and then went to the upper floors to view the beautiful hallways on the courtroom floors. The courtrooms were locked, so we could not see inside unfortunately. If you are in Placer County Old Town area, don't miss coming here. It will only take you about an hour, and you will learn a lot about local and California history.

Wendy docent
Oct 2020
This is review number Maestro or Maestra a few notes on the piano if you please SIXTY of this excellent museum!

If this right one, is inside their of Historic Court House, Historic Court Room! With almost October, one exhibit has skeleton wearing mask! Hey that what happens with Mister Corona Virus around if one not wears their mask!

The docent named Wendy! Very knowledgeable of the different exhibits! Not only that there another museum, she call them to confirm they open that day! Writes me map gives directions to walk there! Okay so I walking, smokey air and all! She sees me, offers ride! By now she changed out of her volunteer clothes, so no did not recognize her, her name tag not there! When she tells me she is of the museum, then I accept ride! She understands Child Safety classes not go in car with stranger, she teaching her own children of that! Thank you then to Wendy! Next day go back to this museum just to write then and there the Compliment Letter for her! As say, very knowledgeable of the exhibits plus she did go way out her way to give me ride to this other museum! This a great museum, donations accepted, I put in that day $2.10, next day another $1.00 just so I can save stamp and write the Compliment Letter!

Cool old (and active) courthouse and museum
Aug 2019 • Family
We have visited here several times and enjoyed each one. This is still an active Placer County courthouse and the decor of one of the courtrooms is early 1900s style. There is a museum downstairs as well as 1900s display rooms. Every Saturday there is a 10 AM docent tour of Old Town that leaves from here - very interesting.

Local history reviewed

Nestled on the ground floor of it old historic building this small gem of a museum gives a great insight into local history over the past 100 years. Don't miss the women's jail beneath the North stairs. Asking questions will likely get you great insight from the attendants.

Fabulous momentos from the past
Feb 2019 • Couples
The docents at the museum are very knowledgeable and friendly. The stop there is by donation. We were surprised to see the jail that had to be fashioned for two women incarcerated there.... under the staircase with no heat and little light! Wow, how things have changed!

Old gold days court house
May 2019
It's a wee bit small, however when you visit you definitely get the gold rush feel. They have some interesting Indian artifacts there that are worth seeing. You will spend roughly 20 to 30 minutes at the most looking at their displays.. It's located in old town auburn where you can browse the shops and find a nice spot for lunch or dinner before or afterwards.

Placer County Historical Museum is worth a visit.
Mar 2019 • Couples
The museum is housed in only 1 of 4 19th century courthouses left in Northern and Central California which retains most of the architectural ornamentation. The museum is located in the 1st floor of the courthouse which still has functional Superior Court rooms. The museum is open daily except for county holidays. We went on a Sunday afternoon and found plenty of parking available. There is no charge but feel free to contribute to the donation box. Photos are allowed without flash. There are exhibits showing Indian artifacts, gold rush history and local historical exhibits. If you have time, watch the video which shows the difficulties involved in building the interstate though the Sierras. If you want to do the one hour tour of Old Town Auburn, meet at the library at 10 AM every Saturday.

Great example of California Gold Rush history from their important era in time.

Still with some offices inside, the old courthouse is a great example of California Gold Rush history from their important era in time, and the museum exhibits help explain that period. Still worth a look at the outside, even when they are closed.

Cute and Charming and Gulp
Dec 2017 • Family
This is a quick little spot to enjoy for an hour or so. Lots of history and stories. This beautiful spacious building was our courthouse, and a WOMAN'S JAIL. If you go check out where they kept those bad girls. It wasn't a simple time out, it was hard core. When you see it, keep in mind... IT SNOWS HERE!! Just sayin.
