The Airport in the Sky occupies a 1,602-foot-tall mountaintop at the center of the Catalina Island, 10 miles from the city of Avalon. It's a great destination by tour or shuttle bus, bicycle, on foot whether hiking the Trans Catalina Trail or walking over from Black Jack, or of course, via private or chartered small plane. Its single 3,250-foot-long runway was constructed by blasting and leveling two adjacent peaks, then using the resulting debris to fill in the gaps. The image is of a T-34 Beechcraft that flew in to participate in one of the Airport in the Sky's monthly Aeroclub Fly-In Days.

Big highlight was seeing buffalo near the road both times. The ocean views from higher up were speculator.

Enjoyed visiting the airport with my wife, daughter and daughter's boy friend. Their "monster" cookies are the best!

I like this little airport, it would be nice if they would re coat the runway. They charge 25 dollars to land here, and the bus ride to Avolon is 35 per person. Often I eat here, and get the buffalo burgers. It hasn't changed...More

Pebbly Beach where they land is just east of where the boats (Catalina Express,etc...) bring in their passengers. It was built for the movie stars and special guests to land wihtout having to go through the main debarking... More
