This is an easy hike, that we were able to do with our 12 and 6 year olds. I turned MapMyRun on, and roundtrip (walking through falls, ect) it was 1.3 miles. I always look up hikes that my 6 year can do wherever we go. My son said this was one of his favorite things we did! Driving up... More

Little Rough drive up, but not to bad. Your in Colorado!! The walk is about a half mile, then to see falls you have to walk in water.

We wanted to access Zapata Falls on our trip to and from Great Sand Dunes. We were driving our family van which sits low. The dirt road access to ZF is easy to find but was rough, rough, rough road condition. Didn't think we'd enjoy beating up our suspension and tires for the access so we did not make it... More

Great hike to cool refreshing water. The road up is rocky, definitely best in four wheel drive vehicle, but worth the trip.

Awesome sight of small falls in a cave. There is a drive up a 3 mile "rough" road.. the road is actually more than rough. Would recommend 4x4 or good ground clearance car. Parking is scarce, then about a half mile hike up to a steam. You gotta walk up/through the stream to get to the falls... totally worth it

The ranger at Great Sand Dunes told us about the falls. When I asked about another hike that I had thought about taking. So my wife and I decided to check it out. Zapata is not far outside the Great Sand Dunes park on the same road. There is a sign telling you where to turn to head up hill... More

The 3 miles up to Zapata Falls is very, very, very bumpy! My car may never be the same:) Once up at the trail head, it is a fairly short, though uphill hike to the stream and falls. It was beautiful, cool and all of us enjoyed the cold water after a morning at the Sand Dunes. Hard soled water... More

After following the wrong trail, we found the correct one & made our way up. It's not too hard of a hike but if you want to see the falls, you're going to have to get your feet wet...in cold water. However, you won't be disappointed.

This was a fun side trip for us. We weren't quite expecting the "off-road" experience on the drive up to the fall's parking lot, but there were smaller cars that seemed to do alright. The hike is about 1/2 mile of moderate/easy hiking. We did it in our sandals, which became a good thing once we got to the river.... More
