Very nice walk along the river. Not much shade, so I would recommend a morning visit. My dog really enjoyed sniffing - clearly wildlife had visited the river to drink or sleep in the grass and he checked those spots thoroughly. The birdsongs were wonderful.

We ate lunch at the Bluff overlook and the views were wonderful. The staff at the visitor's center was very helpful. The walk along the Rio Grande river is not shaded at all.

Maybe it was the time of day, but we really didn't see any wildlife on our auto tour. My kids had soaked their shoes at the sand dunes so we didn't do the walks. The visitor center was closed and there wasn't much info to...More

The Rio Grande River runs through this NWR and the scenery in the middle of the San Luis Valley is majestic, Not much in the way of wildlife when we were there, although just next door in Monte Vista NWR there were flocks of sandhill...More

This place could be better. I realize it is managed for wildlife, but the way it is arranged seems to be designed to keep humans and animals/birds separated as far as possible. We go to many NWRs. Most of them find a way to accommodate...More
