Built in 1880 and little changed since, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the finest and most spectacular example of steam era mountain railroading in North America. Its equipment, structures and vast landscape exist today as if frozen in the first half of the 20th century. USA Today readers voted Cumbres & Toltec the Best Scenic Train Ride in America. Climb aboard this National Historic Landmark for a 64-mile day trip you’ll never forget. Our coal-fired steam engine carries you through steep mountain canyons, high desert, and lush meadows as you zig zag between the Colorado and New Mexico border. Open your eyes to spectacular and rare Western scenery which can only be viewed from this train’s unique route. Ride in the Victorian elegance of our deluxe parlor car or choose the budget-friendly coach car. Either way, a delicious buffet lunch is included. Trains depart daily from Chama, NM and Antonito, CO, from late May’s blooming wildflowers through the golden leaves of October.

The vistas you'll see from the train are unbelievably beautiful. Certainly take your camera, but be advised that the camera can't capture all of what you'll see. Docents ride the train to explain the history of the line and to highlight points of particular interest...More

We took a one way trip from Chama Nm. To Antonito Co. Stayed two nights and returned day train. This ride is better than the Durango one. They are way more friendly and liberal. For your couch seat...You can stand out side on the platform...More

How nice it was to get away from the big city and enjoy miles and miles of scenery. We have ridden a number of historic trains in Colorado and this was the best.

My husband and I went on this train ride at the beginning of our road trip. We stayed in Antonito, CO the night before and took the bus from Antonito, CO to Chama, NM, about an hour drive. Once the haze lifted, our day was...More

This is a GREAT train ride and oh so scenic! While traveling to Colorado on a road trip I saw a little sign that directed me to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. I had heard about it, but had never been on it, so...More

Like all tourist trains it's not a fast trip and as you'd expect on a narrow gauge railroad it shakes and rattles quite a bit. But the views are wonderful and staff are knowledgeable and friendly. I recommend the Parlor Car. Much better views of...More

Not in Chama. However, in Antonito you could check with the folks at the Narrow Gauge Railroad Inn (Phone: 866-267-9053). They operate a dog rescue business so might be up to boarding a dog as well.
