Spectacular in September; Wonderful throughout the summer

This is a challenging 2.8 mi hike with 1,965 vertical feet. The lake is very nice, nestled up against cliffs, so it's great exercise on a very well defined trail, but this hike... read more

This is a nice hike but there are so many great hikes around Aspen this is not in my top five. It starts off pretty steep switch backing through an Aspen grove. There are a few nice overlooks along the way. Once you reach the pine forest the climb is much more gradual and easy. There are a couple of... More

This is a challenging 2.8 mi hike with 1,965 vertical feet. The lake is very nice, nestled up against cliffs, so it's great exercise on a very well defined trail, but this hike becomes totally remarkable in September when the Aspen leaves have turned and flutter in the wind.

We did this hike 4th of July weekend. The trail is pretty steep for the first 1.5 miles or so (switchbacks through Aspen trees). The trail is a bit narrow in spots so watch your footing when passing others. You will have some respites from the climb as you pass a couple of meadows and some spots where there are... More

My wife and I hiked this trail last week (mid-June). We arrived at the Trailhead at 10:30 AM and headed up with full packs, planning on spending the night at the lake. The trail is fairly steep, climbing approximately 2,000 feet in 3 miles. At around 10,500 ft. we ran into occasional snow covering the trails, which got deeper as... More

This is a steep and stunning hike. Be prepared for a stairmaster-like hike at altitude but also be prepared for stunning vistas and a beautiful lake

This hike is scenic and culminates at American Lake, a small alpine body of water. It should be done in summer or early fall.

There is a small book, sold in outfitting stores, and ski shops, in Aspen, that lists all the local hiking trails, mile by mile, discussing the difficulty of th ehike and what to expect. NEVER underestimate the mountain, even if the description says it's an easy hike....it may not be easy for you. exercise restraint in the name of personal... More

You have to be willing to work, the beginning is steep. Views get better the higher you go. Passes through forested area and two mountain meadows. Short drive from Aspen.

We took about 2 hours up and 90 minutes down - the incline isn't super intense but it is sustained, so you can get a nice workout in if you keep a good pace. The aspen trees were gorgeous last weekend, and the lake at the end of the hike was really nice for a quick snack and to let... More

Out first hike around Aspen so still adjusting to the altitude. Did the climb up in 2 hours, with many stops to catch our breath. Good track, soft surfaces and stable. Beautiful forested areas finishing up with glacial moraines and lake. Small lake with good spots to have lunch on the shoreline. Quite a bit of trout activity which kept... More
