We were staying at the Sweet Songs Jungle Lodge nearby and decided to visit the gardens. It was a nice walk with a lot of information about plants and trees, both local and from all over. We did a self-guided tour with the provided book, but I would recommend the guided tour so you don't miss out on any information. Rommuek (not sure of spelling) was in the front office. When we came back, he was so wonderful and talked to us about the monkey pot trees that were out front and the orchid nursery. He was very helpful and made the whole experience more interesting.

This is a fantastic display of all the botanical beauty Belize has to offer. It is interesting to put a "leafy face" to familiar names for trees, flowers and shrubs that you see or hear about. I came away feeling I was more at one with my Belizean surroundings. A beautiful way to spend a relaxing, calming afternoon after hectic 'adventuring'.

Visiting the botanical gardens was an impulse for us. We loved it! Make sure to take the paid tour, its worth it. We learned so much more from our guide than we could have on our own. He showed us the orchids and explained there attempts to catalogue, propagate and save Belize's native orchids from loggers. He also pointed out why each plant was unique and beneficial to people or its environment.
Quick note, Its about 4 miles down a gravel road, Don't worry you'll get there and its worth the drive.

We visited during wet season and the weather was really rainy. Still, the tour was really educational and we learned interesting tips about tropical plants, local or otherwise.

It's a lovely property and a rich array of plants, but don't miss the chance to really learn about the plants. By hiring a guide for a very reasonable $20 we spend over an hour walking the property and learning about all the species, their medicinal properties and unique uses in the local region. Very relaxing way to spend an afternoon and made us appreciate the jungle even more.

We stayed at Sweet Song Lodge which is right next to BBG, we had a couple of hours to spend and decided to visit. The garden is better then we thought! Lots of trees and birds and the trails are nicely maintained. We arrived closed to closing the staff allowed us to stay past closing which is really really nice.
At the time of our visit, a northern Potoo was staying in one of the Guanacaste tree - we couldn't find it but one of the grounds keeper saw us milling about and helpfully point it out to us.

Saw a Trogon, Motmot, Jacamar and several birds within minutes of arrival. The grounds are beautiful and very well kept. The trails are breathtaking. There is a family of howler monkeys hanging around and if you're lucky you can spot them.
The trails take you to the river bed perfect for a dip and small picnic.
We did the self guided tour and had a great time.

We love botanical gardens and this one was was unique and informative. Our enthusiastic guide took around for 2 hours. He explained their trees in great detail. We were the only guests at the garden, in fact. Their specialty is tree varieties and orchids. Price is inexpensive. Go! Do not miss!

We only had a little bit of time here but could have spent a day. Get a guide to learn about all the amazing plants and their uses in the medicinal area. Fascinating!!

Ginormous Thanks to Judy and everyone at BBG for a most enjoyable stay. This place is truly magical what with such a vast array of tropical flora and fauna in a beautiful location. I learned so much during my time there studying medicinal and edible plants plus many of the other components that go into growing and maintaining a successful garden. Rudy as my guide explained things to me in a very thorough, precise and down to earth kind of way. When Ken & Judy acquired this land in 1993 it was just cow pasture and with their labor of love plus lots of dedicated help have transformed it into a slice of heaven right here on earth. The cottage where I stayed situated adjacent to the property was delightfully tranquil and surrounded by an abundance of nature ~ so awesome to awaken every morning to the symphony of bird calls. Also really cool to see school groups visiting BBG from all over Belize and knowing about the outreach to local communities creating opportunities for kids to learn meaningful new skills after which their success rate at finding employment in the botany field has been remarkably high.

Hi, my husband is a collector of orchids and other tropical plants. We will be in Ambergris Cay in July for a fishing trip but have a few days for sightseeing. We'd like to hire a private guide to possibly go visit the botanical gardens some plant nurseries and tropical forest. Any recommendations for making this happen?

Hi, my husband and I have a private Bioreserve including a collection of native orchids in the Cayo district. He was a professor in the US and has a PhD. in Biology and Ecology, before permanently moving to Belize. He would be your guide. If you are interested in a few hour tour of our reserve, Dr. Stephen Zitzer
