I have travelled much of the world and this was a highlight for me. Beautiful beyond words. Don't just do a quick day trip trying to cover as much as possible. I spent a good 4 to 5 days travelling around the villages, taking in the setting and enjoying the views. Really is breathtaking. Try and get a hotel or guest house with a view. The morning setting when the sun comes out and again when the sun sets in the evening is a magical moment you won't forget! The sun glistens on the water. The culture of the villages, the food and the atmosphere is a travel experience that will stay with you forever.

Our favorite vacation spot! We visited here 4 times and we’ll be back again soon. Gorgeous volcanoes, amazing people, beautiful natural beauty. Boats take you anywhere around the lake, the little towns are cute and full of friendly locals, food is great, you can do all kinds of adventures, from hiking to parasailing and anything in between. Incredible place. LOVE IT! Definitely an amazing place to visit!!!

The biggest tourist attraction has become a place of deceit. For unsuspecting tourist, this has become hotbed of buying non existent services. The lake itself needs to be cleaned up off pollutants.

A shout out to Tierra Maya Travel Agency, on Av. Santander 1-77 in town in Panajachel. We were just walking around, hoping to find a ride in two days, directly to Guatemala City airport (without stopping in Antigua, as most do). We saw this place and they accommodated our request, and for a reasonable price (just under $70 for the two of us). Picked us up at hotel; very nice, comfortable vehicle, pleasant ride, and got there in less time than expected. Would highly recommend them. P.S., we had already visited Antigua for a few days (highly recommend as well), so didn't want to go out of the way to stop there going to airport.

While visiting Antigua, we spared a day for touring around "Panajachel", "Santa Catarina Palopó" and the unmissable "Lago Atitlán"! On the Southwestern highlands of Guatemala, a blue lake stands right on a deep massive volcano crater! Surrounded by hills, plantations, Mayan villages and the iconic volcanoes of "San Pedro", "Tolimán" and "Atitlán", the lake is a must see at any trip to this part of Guatemala. Boat rides and even helicopter tours can be arranged! Enjoy!

2 1/2 hour drive with no rest stop over terrible roads. Difficult embarkation to boat with quite hazardous disembarkation. Lake is spectacular and boat ride is pleasant. Hotel at Panajachel where excellent lunch was served was outstanding. Souvenir sellers were quite aggressive frequently physically blocking the path. One group followed us by boat and descended upon us again on the other side. Some could not be dissuaded with polite decline.

Lake Atitlan is Guatemala's largest tourist attraction and for good reason. The lake and it's views of Volcanos and mountains are stunning. There is a lakeside towns to suit everyone; for backpackers it is San Pedro, for hippies it is San Marcos, for those who want peace and quiet it is Santa Cruz. It is good to stay at different towns to experience these different vibes. We stayed at both San Pedro and Santa Cruz. There were plenty of activities and restaurants at San Pedro. Santa Cruz was more limited, however it had perfect views of the San Pedro and Atitlan Volcanoes across the lake and was very relaxing. Publico water taxis run frequently and can get you across the lake for 25Q or less, with prices varying depending on how far you go.

Really enjoyed being here and visiting villages. Stayed near sleepy Santa Catarina de Palopo but had bumpy boat rides to Santiago de Atitlan, San Juan and San Pedro. Each of the villages were different, and vibrant with colours, lurking volcanoes, goods for sale and fun visits, San Juan,
Picturesque and arty, Santiago, interesting and San Pedro commercialised for backpackers, at least near lakeside

Beautifully situated for trips out by boat to San Juan and Santiago a lovey hotel with fantastic views over the lake. The rooms were clean and very comfortable.
The restaurant had seating inside and out, we found the portions of Guatemala food to be OTT huge plate fulls with lots of potatoe and rice.
The food in the hotel was ok - more 3* than 4*. They had a lovely swimming pool with plenty of sun beds and seating to make the most of the incredible view.

What should we expect to pay for transport from Antigua to Panajachel? There will be four in our group. Recommendations for private transport companies, or ?? Thanks!

I just come back from Guatemala trip one week ago, and Lake Atitlan indeed is amazingly beautiful. As some people mentioned here that the greatest explorer, natualist and geographer Von Humboldt called it "the most beautiful lake in the world.". I am a great admirer of Humboldt and I have been to many places he visited in America more than two hundred years ago, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Cuba and of course USA. From the books and memos I read about Humboldt's trip to south and central America, he seems never set foot in today's Guatemala thus in Lake Atitlan. Does anyone have evidence or records that Humboldt actually visited Lake Atitlan ?

Hello,
I'm going to Guatemala in May, and I would like to know how many days do you recommend to stay here in Santiago? I'm only going for 5 days.
How may of this towns that you mention are worth visiting? did you hike any of the volcanos?
Is the ferry expensive?
Thanks

Five days on the lake is a good amount of time. Panajachel is easily the biggest town. It has the most restaurants and shopping, but I enjoy staying in one of the smaller towns. The boats to and from the villages are very cheap. You can easily and cheaply visit all of them in the time you are there. The boat rides cost from 10 to 15 quetzales, depending on how far you go. San Marco and San Pedro are medium size villages, each with their own charm. We stayed in Santa Cruz, which is small but beautiful. Santiago is a town with more of a local infrastructure than any other on the lake other than Pana. We hiked from Santa Cruz to San Marco. Very nice hike. My friend hiked to the top of Pedro Volcano. It's about 1,500 meters of elevation gain. Nice view, but some huffing and puffing. A restaurant in Pana that doesn't look like much but which has excellent food is Deli llama del Fuego. If you like to shop, go to the Chichi market, about an hour away, two days a week. Have fun.
