would have rated 5 stars but had to deduct one cuz its needs to be kept clean. saw plenty of trash on the trails and its so sad to know that people wasting this away. Hope this can still be changed as the hike itself is not too hard, offers great view of the city and landscapes. Went too early... More

Sadly this volcano is very poorly maintained. There is trash everywhere. There was so much up at the summit that we couldn't even sit without being covered in flys and bees. The hike was also harder than we expected. Make sure you bring enough food and water! Also, sadly it was really cloudy and we couldn't see anything so make... More

I and three friends got on a chicken bus at El Calvario at 5:20 am. For two quetzales, we were dropped off down the road from the trail head, starting the hike at 6. Because we weren't camping or carrying a lot of things, we were able to make it to the top by 9 am. It was very difficult,... More

The altitude can make this trek hard, even if you are in good shape. Slow and steady. The view is pretty awesome, little bit of luck involved as to how much the clouds obscure.

When in Quetzaltenango an absolute must is climbing Volcán Santa María. This rising volcano is a hikers' dream in the western highlands of Guatemala. The trail is challenging, but absolutely worth every minute of effort.

it is not a walk in the park, especially when you plan on camping on the volcano and have to carry sleeping bags and supplies of water etc. all the way up. But when you finally get there and look at Santi Aguito and other volcanos below, you know it's worth it :-)

This day hike was challenging but so worth it. Just make sure you bring a jacket & a beanie in the morning as it's freezing when we did it and wear appropriate shoes as the path down was quite muddy for us. Highly recommended it, the view is magnificent.

It was so far the best hike (due to the view on the top) but also the hardest hike. If you are well in shape you can make it in 2 hours. You do not need a guide but good to have a mobile with GPS and the track on it bc there are two places, where you could get... More

Hiking his volcano Santa Maria requires a lot of energy and good physical conditions because it is very steep. It takes up to 4 hours to reach the summit. During the hike, climbers can look the Valle de Palujonoj, Cerro Quemado, Volcan Palujonoj the city of Quetzaltenango. From the summit hikers can look the huge and small eruptions from Santiaguito... Now I know what they mean with a "difficult" hike! Although the hike is amazing, it is difficult! Especially when you arrive at the top and there is no view at all - too cloudy. I can't say the hike was the best ever, but it is a nice one. That's for sure! It was more difficult than Acatenango, even... More
