Beautiful small black sand beach that doesn't feel commercialized. Sand is a bit hard and it's not ideal for swimming, but overall it's beautiful with a local Hawaiian feel. There is sea turtles there which is pretty neat to see. Highly recommend.

We enjoyed our trip to Punalu'u Beach. On this black sand beach, there was a great deal of space to spread out. There was not many people there, and the majority of them were tourist just passing through. There were about 5 or 6 sea turtles there basking in the sun. The kids really enjoyed seeing them. The water was... More

It is quite possible this only applies to the day we were there, but the water was quite rough. The lifeguard actually asked the one person snorkeling to stop. BUT, the beach itself was a neat experience. Beware the hidden rocks and ridiculously hot sand when it's sunny. Well worth it though for the Sea Turtles (we were able to... More

Wow! The black sand is unreal and we were lucky enough to see a sea turtle basking in the sun. Saw a few others in the surf too. Great stop on the way to the volcano. Well worth the dip off RT. 11!

Really nice beach. Located on the south part of the island it is a little drive from Kona or where tourist generally stay. There were plenty of sea turtles on the beach where they come to lay their eggs. The water is beautiful and has plenty of waves for surfing. The drive down is quite wonderful. You really get a... A black sand beach with a few sea turtles, this place would be a good stop when you drive towards the volcano from Kona side. With washrooms and some great views of the ocean too!

This a very unique beach with awesome views! The beach itself is rocky despite looking like sand. It is actually small pieces of volcanic rock. There are some cool lava tubes you can go into. In the park there are burial sites which adds to the unique factor.

The guide books can be very misleading. Mine showed many sea turtles basking on the sands of Punaluu Black Sand beach. That might happen but I bet it happens rarely. There are so many tourists and locals on this beach now that over a 3 day period, I only saw 4 turtles. That's going in the morning, afternoon and evening.... More

This is a nice little beach on the south side of the Big Island. As named, the sand is a beautiful black. Near the beach is a fresh water pond with lots of flower lilies. A total of 4 turtles were at the beach. A stone area was setup to allow people to observe the turtles without bothering them. The... More

An area was marked with stones to discourage tourists from bothering the turtles. People were swimming but they had on water shoes to protect their feet.
