We stopped here on our way back from Hawi. There is an interesting self guided tour we enjoyed. It's a beautiful setting and cool to learn history of the area. It doesn't take very long and it's free. I was glad we went.

Loved this place. We stopped in two small towns before here and I swear more people lived in Lapakahi than in either of the two places we visited. The self-guiding brochure was key. It's a seriously rocky walk, so watch your step.

An interesting area, to take a step back in time. As some have noted, this is a site that would benefit from more attention and support services. This is an important historic reference that deserves to be focused upon. Still, one can get a sense of what this site might once have been, and a little taste of what living... More

It's very easy to see why Hawaiian royalty chose this place to enjoy their homeland. The combination of surf, rocks and vegetation is stunning. We wished there was more historical info posted about the site, but that is part of its unspoiled charm. A couple things to note - trails are very rocky and uneven in many places. There is... More

I enjoyed the self-guided walk. Make sure to grab a pamphlet at the large sign at the beginning of the path. Fantastic views with great bits of history and culture satisfied the history buff in me. Along the way you will feel the mist off the ocean on a windy day. The path itself is pretty good with a few... More

We visited Lapakahi State Historical Park on 1-4-17. It was very isolated and off the beaten path. There is a visitor’s center with no park ranger on staff. There is a self-guided walking tour, which we partially completed and was interesting. We just wish there was staff available for questions about the park.

This little visited village is located about a half hour from Kawaihae. There are two loop trails, the main trail is 0.5 miles and you can see remains of a canoe enclosure (Halau Wa'a) salt making pans, a reconstructed house site (Hale) Konane (checkers) board, and an offering stone (Ku'ula). There is also a secondary trail (0.3 miles) with additional... More

I imagine that once this is made into a National Park (it's going to happen) it will get some needed cleanup and support that it truly deserves. A wonderful ancient village so visitors can stroll and learn about life before European influence. You MUST get a flyer at the start of the walk so you know what you are looking... More

Decided to drive to Hawi and visit one of the national state parks. The drive there was scenic and beautiful. Easy drive. This park is a 600+ year old fishing village. Lots of history and things to see. Just the whole thought of how the Hawaiian natives lived off the land and sea is super interesting. The village looks out... More

Beautiful location with ample car parking available. Good self guided tour through the remains of an 800 year old Hawaiian village. There was a ranger onsite to answer any questions. Children loved exploring this site, well worth having a break from the car to visit
