Breathtaking area with beautiful scenery. When you take the road to the Menehune Fish Ponds you are along side of the wildlife refuge and the best place to get an overview is from the Menehune Fishpond Overlook.

We drove through the refuge on the single lane road. It was nice but the trail was the highlight. We hiked up a very steep and often muddy trail. I would recommend you wear hiking shoes for traction. At http by the transmission lines you...More

Before leaving Hanalei, we stopped briefly at the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge where we saw taro paddies and quite an impressive array of rare birds including Hawaiian Stilt, Pacific Golden Plover, Hawaiian Moor Hen, Hawaiian Koot, Hawaiian Duck, and Hawaiian Goose.
