While the Grotto was attractive, the riverboat ride was boring and sedentary. The boat guides were late(We came from a cruise ship) and were somewhat disinterested. It would be more independent and interesting to Kayak up to the Grotto. I don't think there is any...More

The riverboat ride was so much fun. We traveled up the river to the Fern Grotto and then walked to the location. Absolutely gorgeous. The guide gave us great information about the area. On the return ride the played and sang wonderful Hawaiian Music. A...More

Took the Smith Family boat through the river up to their Fern Grotto. It was a lovely boat ride. Lots of Hawaiian history and many stories along the way. It started raining right before we arrived at the grotto but that didn’t hinder anyone’s spirit....More

We loved the Fern Grotto, where kings and queens of Hawaii used to get married; now it is the location of many other weddings. The boat ride to the grotto was very relaxing, with music and dancing. The grotto itself has many hanging ferns, and...More

The last day of our cruise was wanting for an excursion so we picked a river boat ride down the Wailua River to a heritage trail showing an interesting Fern Grotto. The ferns are now regrowing in the lush vegetation after a hurricane ripped the...More

The boat ride on the river to fern grotto was nice but I could barely understand what the driver was saying so I got absolutely nothing out of his presentation. I did enjoy the singing and dancing of the locals on the boat. Thank goodness...More

We were looking for something to do that didn't take all day and wasn't too expensive, so we chose this. The boat ride was fun with the hawaiian singers. I was a little disappointed with the grotto as you could only get close to it...More

This is one of the those things that everyone needs to do at least once. It appears that the Smith Family has been doing these tours for a long time. The boats are large (40-50 passengers), the crew entertains the passengers for every minute of...More

The boat ride is nice but when you actually get to the grotto it is disappointing. The staff are friendly and they sing a couple of songs and do a Hawaiian dance. You stand on a platform and look at the grotto but you can't...More

We started slightly up river at Kamokila Hawaiian village. From there, it was maybe ten minutes. If you start at the other kayak rental places at the mouth of the river, it will take you longer. There isn't much to see in... More
