This is a hard road to evaluate and it depends on your criteria or what you value. If you want high scenic value and are willing to endure a difficult drive including single lanes and blind curves and crawling along at a snail's pace, this...More

Looking on TripAdvisor I was surprised to see that almost 30% of the reviews describing the Highway 340 Route give terrible and poor marks to this beautiful road. It is true that Highway 340 is not Road to Hana, but it goes almost al the...More

We did this route this week, one of the many times we have done so, and conditions were perfect. Stopping at Honolua Bay trail to begin with and walking through the jungle like setting before opening up to the beautiful bay. Then it was a...More

I agree that the majority will find this a scary experience - and the risk/reward for even doing it is low. The reason - almost all the good stuff around the north shore of West Maui is from Kapalua around to the Ohia Trail -...More

We were following the Gypsy app (great by the way) and just exploring around. The app said if you want an adventure keep going but roads are narrow and winding. That was an understatement. Some folks on here saying not a big deal but it...More

When we were in Hawaii a few years ago. I was told that the best way to see this is on the public Bus. As you can guess, "They" were right. It was a very pleasant trip and I most heartily recommend it for those...More

We thoroughly enjoyed the drive. The scenery was awesome! The place where we stayed said it was "not recommended" to drive there, but others said it was not a problem. Since we do a lot of travelling in the Western states, we are accustomed to...More

On our final day in Maui, we decided to drive this road. This was not an easy decision, because I had seen a few reviews here on TA and on other websites that described this highway as perilous and unsafe. However, I thought that perhaps...More

Awesome drive great views. It did pour rain at some points causing some small washouts, but just take it slow and your good to go. All the people who scream and cried in their reviews must live in a bubble, enjoy life folks!

I assume you are coming from Lahaina/Kaanapali north past Kapalua. Recommendations in order as driving. Note that none of these places have big easy signs - or any signs, read the guidebooks, use maps etc to find them. 1... More

It varies as the road goes up over higher ground and descends frequently to sea level to cross river valleys. At its highest, several hundred feet.

The answer is - DONT drive from Kahului to Kaanapali. on 340. You will be on the outside on a road with no guard rail, drop offs and mostly no room to pass - backing up around blind corners needed. See my one star review of... More
