Pretty long walk from cruise ship 🚢 out of industrial pier area. Beautiful views of the harbor and Pacific Ocean. Some decent shopping if you uber or taxi a mile or two. Island tours are gorgeous.

Driving back to Lahaina we stop to look and the large cruise ship dominating the port of Kahului.
The waters in the bay surrounding the port are a lovely blue colour and there are many small sandy beaches around the edge, dotted with palm trees.
The Port is rather industrial looking and it's a long to walk from the ship to anything.

TIP: With limited time I suggest that you take one of the cruise ships organized shore excursions.
Please would you give a thumbs up below if you found this review informative? Thank you.

Went to the Oceanarium well worth a visit, the best ever I been to. You could see the whales from the viewing platform who were there to mate before returning to Alaska. The living reef is amazing

The actual harbour is beautiful with a lovely beach and lovely water to swim in. The actual port is simply that - a port. Don’t expect too much here.

It is a one mile hike from the gangplank of the ship through the fenced path of the harbor to the shopping center that is said to be across the street from the pier. This is where you get the shuttle to go get your rental car at the Maui Beach Hotel, which is not too much further than the shopping center. There is no parking at the pier, so you pay $5 to park it at the hotel where you got it, then walk or Uber back to ship and reverse that in the morning. You also turn the car back in at the hotel, and when you turn it in they will shuttle you back to the pier, closer than the long fenced walk. It just helps to know these things, especially when you are carrying beach towels, snorkels and other beach supplies.

For being the only major commercial port of Maui, this is a quiet, tiny harbor. Like most ports around the world, Kahului Harbor is 100% commercial. There are no restaurants or shopping within the harbor, which is why visitors from the cruise ship are forced to flock to the Maui Mall across the street or Queen Kaahumanu Center down the road for any sort of entertainment.

The gulf-shaped waters are well-protected from the choppy north shore ocean by two man-made peninsulas. Situated on the east peninsula are the State Harbor Office and just 3 piers where all of Maui's cargo comes in, and is the only pier on the island that is long and deep enough to berth 2 cruise ships end to end. If you're shipping in or out of the island, you'll definitely do business here with either Matson, Pasha, or Young Brothers.

The central section of the cove, which isn't officially part of the harbor but shares its waters, features a white sandy beach and is home to a now defunct restaurant (formerly Hideaway,) a canoe club, and two simple hotels, the Maui Seaside and Maui Beach Hotel, with a third hotel being planned by the owners of the Pagoda Hotel on Oahu. The beach has no facilities, and I wouldn't recommend swimming in the water anyway, only because there is too much maritime activity that I feel pollutes the water. Surrounding the majority of all theses areas are parking lots that serve as storage facilities for automobiles.

The west end peninsula is the least lively but features a boat ramp and is the gathering spot for a handful of food trucks, and at times some shady people. The waters near this area is popular with surfers.

Our NCL cruise ship docked in Kahului. To get to the city from the dock, we had to walk through a disgusting decayed industrial area where old sugar cane warehouses were falling apart, where huge piles of tractor tires were piled, and where fences topped with barbed wire formed a path on the cracked concrete to lead us to the main street across from the Long's Drug Store, the only thing to do nearby. I felt like I was in a third world country (and yes, I have been) rather than in the United States. It was extremely disappointing to see that this port would "welcome" guests in this manner. We paid a driver to take us to Lahaina the next day and it was a much nicer area....apparently that is where the Princess Cruise Line docks. I had expectations that Maui would be a beautiful island, but based on my experience, it needs to have a major clean up to make it presentable.
