About
This natural spout shoots up to 100 feet in the air—the view from the hilltop is impressive enough, but a hike down a rocky trail will let you get up close and personal.
Approaching from the island’s west side is a lot easier than the drive from the east, and you may find the descent down to the geyser challenging. Wear appropriate footwear, as the area can be slippery and dangerous, and time your visit during high tide when the water spouts are at their most impressive. While you’re there, don’t miss checking out the Nakalele Point lighthouse, a short walk away. – Tripadvisor

The walk down the mountain is not for the faint of heart and really is best for families with well-behaved children (running ahead can get them killed) and those with strong ankles and knees. You need to get close to see the rainbow in the spray, so it is worth the challenging walk. It's definitely worth the trip if you are staying on the west side of the island.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 27 December 2022
- Scott B81 contributionsBlowhole is AMAZING! The walk down/up is more difficult than guidebooks say.The blowhole itself is amazing! What a otherworldly landscape and when the waves really crash in, the blowhole is really impressive! I left off one star because the walk down is more of a clamber over rocks. Some really steep parts. Wear good sneakers or walking shoes, not flip flops or sandals. This can also be part of a fun multi-stop drive up to this more wild part of Maui.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 29 December 2022
- Jeremy N5 contributionsBig waves lead to a spectacular showDrive there is easy coming from the west. You pass one bridge that is one lane. Great views there and back. We arrived at the blowhole around 9:45am. As others advised drive past the first mile marker 38. The closer lot is located there. You’ll likely see others parked and walking to the blowhole. I didn’t think going down and up was that bad. I wore tennis shoes. The day we went the waves were huge on the North Shore so it was quite a show! A great free activity to do.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 January 2023
- shailaDallas, Texas13 contributionsBlowholeVery active blowhole, makes for a great show! It has lots of parking within a decent distance. It’s not a far walk from the road to be able to see the blowhole, however if you’re like me and you want to get close to it, it’s a little walk down a rock trail. If you walk down there, you’re likely to get sprayed with water! Didn’t take much time but was fun.Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 13 January 2023
- Krisco6419 contributionsWorth the DriveThis drive is definitely worth it. The road is a little windy but well-maintained. Not a hard drive at all as some have indicated. My wife and have been a couple of times and have really enjoyed it. We were here in 2019 shortly before the “heart” rock was damaged. Really bummed that is gone. It’s an easy hike to have a good viewpoint from afar but I recommend wearing shoes to go down further. Also, the hike back up can be a little strenuous for those that don’t hike or walk regularly - my watch says it’s less than 1/4 mile but 270 foot gain in elevation from the bottom.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 February 2023
- J RRichmond, Canada16 contributionsA must see!We enjoyed the scenic drive to the blowhole. It was a busy attraction and was easy enough to find . It is a small hike down to the blowhole, if you want to get close (but still a safe distance). Sneakers or supportive shoes are recommended. It is very hot on the hike down, bring water! While we were there we saw whales in the ocean and the blowhole itself. It felt like a real treat!Visited February 2023Written 20 February 2023
- beth ann kHalstead, Kansas1,792 contributionsQuite something to seeThere is lots of parking to go see the Blowhole, and it's a fairly easy walk to get close enough to see it. There are lots of signs warning of danger, and to not get close, however. It's pretty cool to seeVisited February 2023Written 28 February 2023
- TDDunk64Indiana238 contributionsA must see while in Maui! This is a must see. If you aren't used to walking on un level surfaces it might be difficult. The path is there but it's not a leisurely walk. It requires a bit of coordination and definitely need to pay close attention. Wear walking shoes not flip flops. I wore hiking sandals and they were fine. Watching others trying to walk the trail with flops made it obvious it wasn't a good idea. The view is amazingly beautiful and definitely worth seeing. You don't have to walk all the way down to the blowhole to get a good picture or view. You can see it from above if you look at the trail and decide it's not for you. There's an area about half way down with large rocks where you can sit or stand and take some great pics and enjoy the view.Visited March 2023Written 11 March 2023
- chuckatbigskyHamilton, Montana341 contributionsWorth the EffortJust a short but interesting drive from Kaanapali area. Parking can be scarce. Short walk to nice vantage point without making trek to the bottom. 5 and 6 year olds did the trek with no problem. 30 minutes round trip.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 April 2023

It wasn't too hard of a hike or walk down, just climbing down the rocks. I'd recommend it to someone, but it's not a must see. It's kind of far away from other things you might be doing that day.Visited February 2023Written 23 June 2023

This was worth the drive to go up to the far west side of the island. Lots of beautiful scenery along the way to the blow hole. Lots of places to pull off and get pictures of the ocean and cliffs and waves. Then when you arrive at the location it’s about a 250 foot flat walk to the edge so you can get pictures of the water shooting up in the sky.

This is a really nice place. If you are staying in North West Maui, I will strongly recommend that you go there. T. The drive to get there is nice. There are red coloured rock formation that you will see as you are driving to the blowhole.
You can see the blowhole by parking your car and walking about 5 mins. But if you prefer, you can walk down. We didnt go down so not sure how long it takes but my guess will be about 20-30 mins. We spent 15 mins here which is about the same for most people that I observed when I was there
There is no entrance or parking fee here. Parking is on the side of the road ie no "established/paved parking lot

Great hike to get closer (but not too close). Our children enjoyed the rocky terrain. We were able to buy a snack from a stand in the parking lot. Bring water. We were hoping to ‘find something’ for lunch, but ended up having to drive back to town because of the remote nature of this excursion. Thank goodness for snacks.
Lots of scenic overlooks and beach stops along the way to get to this short hike & natural wonder.

The terrain is steep and rocky, but not necessary to hike all the way down to view the blowhole as it can still be seen from above.
We arrived late afternoon and were able to see the waves crashing and water ‘blow’. The views from above of the open ocean and neighbouring cliffs was spectacular though very windy.
We did not have an issue with parking at that time of day and the banana bread stand was still open.
Nakalele blowhole may have been the destination, though the drive to and from was also amazing with several stopping places to admire the views and changing landscape.

Pretty spectacular. The Nakalele Blowhole is pretty hard to get to and hike down to, but it's amazing to watch and listen to up close.

The walk/hike takes 15-20 minutes (one-way, and there are places where you have to ease yourself down over boulders, slide gently down on your rear or otherwise take tenuous steps, but it is worth every bit of energy you expend.
The views are incredible. Event when the blowhole is not at its highest (high tide is beat), the waves crashing on the cliffs, views of other cliffs and wildlife (crabs, small fish in pools) make this exceptional.
We have done this on three separate trips to Maui, and it’s a 100% must-do.
Go in the morning before crowds build. We went by 8 a.m., and we had maybe 6-8 other people near us. When we drove by two hours later, the parking was filled with 20-25 cars.

Watch tides. This is only good when tide is coming in. Not enough water at low tide. We unfortunately got there when there wasn’t enough water to make the water erupt.

Beautiful day trip. Was I completely ‘WOW’D’, no, but I would do it again. We have a car and are here for 10 days so a great day. Seems to be some amazing stops we were You aware of on the way from Kapalua you may want to make a day of it.

So it’s a climb down and back up! Wear proper shoes!!!! I’m not overly fit, but I wanted to do this. It’s 100% worth it. The landscape near the blowhole is like something from a science fiction movie. Be careful to time your visit with high tide otherwise the blowhole may not be very impressive! It’s a fun climb down and the climb up is fun too but I had to stop for breaks! Tie your hair up and wear sneakers. And do this!!! You won’t regret it.

We have someone with us that uses a walker so cannot hike down the rocks or even walk very far. Were you able to see the blowhole from where you park?

From the Car Park - very doubtful. It would require exceptional sea conditions.
The Wales is maybe 80/90 yards over even ground. No rocks or clambering required.
Enjoy your visit.

My wife will be 6 months pregnant at the time of our visit, is the hike to the blowhole all that bad? Wondering if this will be too much for her. She does enjoy hiking in general though.

It’s not a difficult trail, however, it is rocky with a couple of big steps, depending on your route down. Take your time going down and you will be fine. It is muddy and slippery if raining.

Is there a decent view from the parking lot (or safely close by). We have a toddler so I am sure we won't be able to make the complete hike down but I would like to see it a little if possible...

Yes. You can walk a short distance from your car and see the blowhole. Regardless put your toddler in closed toe shoes so he/she doesn't hurt his/her feet on the lava rock.

I was wondering if you thought the hike down was very strenuous and a great distance? I can walk but not long, long distances as my knee is not in the best of shape. I was planning on getting some good shoes for walking. I really want to see this, but was concerned about the difficulty.

The hike is a fairly strenuous one, especially with unstable rocks and steep bits of hillside. You can get a decent view from up top without having to hike down, so I would recommend going that route if you have bad knees, hips, or ankles. If you decide to go down, I highly recommend having real shoes on (not flip flops and especially not barefoot).

Is there a viewing point from which to see this where there are several shops located. I am trying to figure out where we stopped when we were there.
MacKenzie A
Cary, NC4 contributions
There is a spot up above the blowhole where there are several local stands selling jewelry, food, and some other things. They aren't there all the time but they have been there the two times I've visited the blowhole. The shop stands are located right next to the road so if they're open on that day, you can't miss them!
