Great History Behind This Cabin

I never knew about the Indian Uprising, and how the people lived around this lake and Spirit Lake. It is nice to see that they have small places like this to learn.

This is a great educational opportunity at the lake. The movie inside the visitor center was interesting and informative. The man working was very knowledgeable.

In order to complete the lakes region experience, this site must be visited. The Spirit Lake massacre was not only devastating for the settlers but also for the native Americans who suffered much as a result of this invasion into their homeland, causing them to fight back, as any of us would if OUR homes and way of life were... Fun place to experience the Spirit Lake Massacre on you own time. Learn how the Indians massacred the early settlers there while talking the women hostage.

Visit the old log cabin and visitor center to learn of years gone by at Lake Okoboji. Very nice displays.

We stay in the area for a week and visiting the Abbie Gardner site is a nice time away from the beach and lake. Take the time to read about the event first and then visit the site. The site is almost scary; spooky.

This is one of the cabins that was part of the Spirit Lake Massacre during which her family were killed and she was taken captive by Indians. The short film of the event is a must see as it brings into focus the conditions existing... More
