Many will tell you this is the most dangerous place in town, I found it wonderful, although decadent, rich of art, history and humanity. Impossible not to get lost, so better having a guide. Otherwise, if you take your time to stop and talk to people, if you show a genuine interest there is no doubt you will find someone... More

This is a lovely labyrinth of homes, shops and cafes. According to the clerk at my hotel, an effort is being made to preserve the historical center from demolition. But don't wait to visit, money talks louder than good intentions and money might want a good portion of this historical center for a new bit of ugly architecture. Do take... More

The oldest area in Algiers (the "old Algiers") built by the ottomans during their presence in Algiers between 1515 and 1830. The "old city" had several doors (5, 7 or even 10 depending on the source of information). Some of them used to be opened in the morning and closed at sunset. Houses and palaces are built in a particular... More

This is an area of Algiers closely linked to the revolution and can be explored as much as suites an individual. There is on carpenter's shop on the ground floor of a small almost triangular house that has some secrets and a remarkable view from its roof several floors up.

This is the oldest part of the city. Some buildings are well preserved while some are about to fall to pieces. A labyrinth of very narrow streets, just for pedestrians, stairs climbing up the hill. You turn one corner and you are in the middle of a local street bazaar. To feel the local culture this is a must to... More

Our guide brought this atmospheric area to life and showed us a stunning 360 degree panoramic view over the harbour and the rest of the casbah along with an introduction to the current way of life which is being threatened by the government which is hoping to relocate the population elsewhere. There are a number of steps but we went... More

The lower Casbah is mainly impresive by the french style houses with arcades for numerous small shops. The upper Casbah is more or less original with arabian roots architecture. Follow the stairs to get there, but do not become lost in the maze. You'll reach the fort, which is also named Kasbah. But since it is to be renewd, you'll... More
