I did not have much time for sightseeing in Maputo, but decided to go to Fortaleza in a spare half hour. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that they had a guide that told me about the history and the statues there.

Was an interesting place to visit. The country have a very rich history, so it was nice to get to delve into it a little. The staff can be a little more helpful and friendly.

Very nice old fort with a properly maintained structure. It often displays art/photos expos in its building. This place is easy to access, can be combined with the local (real) fish market around its walls. Its a nice historical place to visit in Maputo.

We enjoyed our visit and had a good overview of this 1st Portugese fortress and prison of the chief of the Shangans - we were fortunate to have a guide as there is not a single translation into English. It is sad to see the good effort of the private tourism industry but sad to see how ignorant the goverments... More

For the history buff this is a fine piece of old colonial history and early history of Lourenzo Marques and Mozambique, it is a little bit dilapidated but so is the rest of Maputo

It cost me 80mtn because they didn't have change...oh well. It's nothing special really. There are a few statues and some grass. I took four pics and was out of there in less than 15 minutes.

A small but nice semi museam. Not too much on offer but still some remains of old colonial past.. At the entrance they charge a little fee for entrance.. found one couple dating there but they left soon. There are few statues n ammunitions still intact..so one must give it a visit

The Fortaleza is about 4 centuries old and was the first line fo defense for maputo city (old Lourenço Marques). It can be visited during the day, and some old portuguese monuments were kept there as well as some fortress artifatcs. From time to time there events organized there, like artisanat shows or corporate parties.

It houses the remains of the great warrior Ngungunhane, last King of Gaza, who challenged Portuguese empire and it is a good place for travellers who are interested in history. Have good collection of old artillery pieces and shells. It is worth visiting if you are in Maputo.

There is an entrance fee, and if you do not have the exact amount do not count that you will get change back. It is rather small fort and if one does not read Portugese, it does not take too long time to visit. But it is nice to see this part of the country's history.
