Goree Island is a Unesco site located a short ferry ride from Dakar. The whole island is the town with charming flower-filled winding pedestrian walkways and stone colonial buildings comprised largely of restaurants, little hotels, souvenir shops and some local housing. It is well touristed...More

We went to Gorée Island on a Sunday. We took the 10am ferry and our guide met us at the ferry. Definitely go with a guide. It’s so worth it! Our guide was excellent, his name was Jerreh. He took us all throughout the island...More

A short water taxi ride from Dakar will bring you to Goree Island. It's a beautiful little island with a dark history. Go to the Madison des esclaves, sobering! Walk the island and check out the local art.

The island is a UNESO World Heritage site and is worth visiting To be sure many of the buildings are dilapidated, but very scenic none the less. Sure the hustlers are aggressive, but we just said no and walked round the island by ourselves without...More

a very historic site. Was the departure point of the slave trade on the West coast of Africa for over two hundred years. A very emotional location.

Extortion racket. Nasty extortionists demand payoffs (apparently at random) from people as they disembark.

Goree island is treated as a historic landmark; nothing can be altered or built on the island. You have to pay to take the ferry to the island and residents pay less than non-residents, just like college tuition in most states. Your fee is $5200...More

One must visit Goree Island when in Senegal, it is historical and has a lot of information to offer. You will take a boat to get from Dakar to Goree, and prices differ depending on your status in Senegal and your nationality.
