One of the leading unique attractions of the area.
This was our second trip to this incredible stupa. It is the area's number one religious attraction. The stupa complex is one of Nepal's UNESCO designated treasures. The place exudes magnetic magic. Majority of visitors enter for free, but we used the official entrance where the tickets are issued. That seems appropriate for the foreign visitors. It is fascinating to watch the crowds of devotees, mixed crowd of tourists, locals, monks, everyone walking in the clockwise direction, most in prayerful concentration. It is recommended to spend some time here. Smell the incense. Observe the customs and people. Enjoy the unique atmosphere. There are many interesting stores and boutiques in the immediate area and four monasteries. Truly a lot to see. We ate a late lunch in a restaurant with the great view of the stupa.

A beautiful religious monument in Kathmandu.
The centuries old stupa with very distinct architecture was once surrounded by rice paddies. If the traditions of stupa building in Sri Lanka is followed in Nepal as well, the monument was likely built around the casket containing the relics of Lord Buddha. The stupa is now fully enclosed by multistorey shops selling various artifacts of tourist interest. The spire of the stupa is believed to be made with solid gold blocks. Even otherwise, the stupa is a religious monument of aesthetic beauty. The Buddha eyes looking benevolently is soothing on the nerves. One gets a clear view of the grandeur of the Boudhinath Stupa from the terrace tea shops surrounding the stupa. It is suggested that the tea shops operating around the monument may kindly restrain their patrons to respect the religious sanctity of the place by not smoking strange smelling weeds. A must visit monument while you are in Kathmandu. Recommended.

    Magnificent stupa
Every corner of this magnificent Buddhist stupa carries a heritage in itself. Wholly, this heritage site is a must visit in Kathmandu. There are cafes and restaurants where you can sit, sip a coffee and enjoy the majesty of this ancient monument. You spin the prayer wheel with your right hand as you circle the temple clockwise. There are pilgrims who travel far and wide to be at this one of Buddhism's most important site.

    Must-see site
In my opinion, this is the primary tourist attraction in Kathmandu — yet this is also a sacred religious shrine to a vast number of folks. It is very inspiring to watch the faithful (and even tourists) circle the vast structure, some spinning the prayer wheels on its walls as they walk clockwise. This UNESCO heritage site is a must-see stop for any visitor. Tickets for foreigners are 400 NRP and are valid for two weeks (pls bring them whenever you are near this site).

    Amazing stupa
This is the largest Stupa in Nepal and a must visit. We spent a week in the area and visited every day. Early morning - 6 am - is a great time to walk around the Stupa, before it gets overly crowded. Everyone walks clockwise around and around. There is always lots of activity in the area and it's a joy to watch the local people in their daily activities. There always seemed to be a celebration or ceremony of some kind going on.

    What a sight
It's a famous Buddhist site. Read up on it before heading over or get a tour guide to max out your experience. You can climb up but I didn't given that it was in the middle of the day (too hot). Alternatively, you could go around the stupa or dine at the Boudha Stupa restaurant to view the top of the Stupa.

A grand and beautiful temple area.
This is a holy site for the Buddhist people. Around the temple are prayer wheels and people walk around the whole temple spinning the wheels as forms of prayers (Advice: if you are walking on the smooth pathway next tot he temple, walk around the temple counter-clockwise out of respect). Surrounding the temple is a huge ring of stores, souvenirs, cafes, craftsmen, paper shops, painting stores, and massage stores (for back, head and foot massages). It is worth walking around it twice as it is easy to miss the unique stores or to miss the monks and children as they take breaks from their temple duties and schooling as monks. The area is colorful with buddhist flags and a lot of support for Tibet. If you are buying souvenirs, just be aware of the souvenirs that hav etc buddhist eyes on them...unless that is what you want. There is an entrance fee to the shopping area around the temple (About 500 Rupees per person)

    Kathmandu Nepal Cultural Enlightenment
Kathmandu Nepal is a stop you likely won’t forget. As we wondered around the city time has not changed a whole lot. One stop, Boudhanath Stupa is a Unesco World Heritage Side. It is one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal and the world. A religious site and place of pilgrimages for Buddhism. During prayer people walk around 3 times or more repeating the mantra. Lot’s a small shops surround the Stupa. Great people watch site.

    Must-visit in Kathmandu
The Boudhanath stupa is our favourite place to visit when in Kathmandu. The area always has both tourists and also local people visiting. Overall a lovely atmosphere. From Thamel the tourist price for a taxi there is around 500 rupees, the entrance fee is 400 rupees per person for foreigners. Definitely worth a visit!

    Interesting and peaceful spot
The stupa was a very interesting place to visit. We walked around the outside, which is completely lined by multiple-storey shops and cafes. It was interesting to sit in one of these cafés and people watch. The place definitely had a peaceful vibe about it.

Boudhanath Stupa is a must-see when visiting Kathmandu. It's one of the largest stupas in the world, and the spiritual energy here is truly mesmerizing. As you walk around the stupa, you can see pilgrims spinning prayer wheels, monks chanting, and people from all over the world taking in the peaceful atmosphere.

The stupa itself is beautiful, with its iconic white dome, eyes of Buddha, and colorful prayer flags fluttering in the wind. I recommend visiting early in the morning or around sunset when the atmosphere is calm, and the stupa is beautifully lit. It’s a great place to meditate, reflect, or simply enjoy the moment.

There are also several rooftop cafes around the area, offering a great view of the stupa while you sip on a cup of tea. You can easily spend a few hours here, soaking in the serenity and exploring the small shops that sell Tibetan artifacts, prayer flags, and souvenirs.

This is one of the world’s largest stupas and home to a large Tibetan Buddhist community in the city. Admission is 400 rupees payable as you approach the main square. On reaching the stupa, the first thing you see are crowds of people all walking clockwise around the perimeter. It is important to walk in this direction as this is a sign of respect. Access is also allowed on the first tier; shoes must be removed. Here devotees are prostrate in prayer, the whole experience is very moving
Good time to visit is late afternoon when a colourful ceremony occurs near the Ajuma shrine. Gifts of rice, sweets, biscuits and money are handed to Buddhist monks, the food is placed in a large vessel and mixed together while one monk recites scriptures and others playing various wind instruments creating a solemn atmosphere. The food is then placed into bags and at the end of the ceremony, handed to devotees as gifts.
Aside from the temple, there are shops and restaurants all around the site, there were huge crowds in the square at the time of our visit and the atmosphere was palpable. A memorable experience.

Take the time to visit this site. Circle around the site like locals do. The site is beautiful during the day and mesmerizing at night. The local stores and markets that surround the site offer beautiful traditional art and crafts from Nepal. Local music complements the spiritual atmosphere of the place.

This stupa and the streets surrounding it are called Little Tibet. Many refugees from Tibet live in the area and have their shops and workshops here. It is the largest stupa in Nepal. There are various legends about its creation. It may have had its origins during the reign of Emperor Asoka, i.e. in the 3rd century BC. It has undergone many renovations, the last one after the earthquake in 2015. It is a very popular pilgrimage site. Very important religious festivals also take place here. It is always crowded but safe. The wake is located in a large courtyard surrounded by buildings with many shops and small galleries. On the northern side of the stupa, it is worth seeing the picturesque Guru Lhakhang Monastery. It is also worth climbing to its roof, where we have a wonderful view of the Boudhanath Stupa and the people pilgrimaging around it. Near the stupa there are three more monasteries, many chortens and smaller religious buildings. The entrance ticket costs only 400 rupees. This is the most "Tibetan" place in the capital of Nepal. I was and am really delighted with it. The Great Stupa has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979.

A beautiful Stupa with souvenir shops encircling it. The Stupa itself is massive with prayer flags running to it from the surrounding buildings.
It was very reasonably priced (Rs 400) and easy to find via the main gate.
The surrounding buildings were arranged in a circle, predominantly tourist shops selling Nepalese souvenirs with roof top cafes - highly recommend sitting in one of these, enjoying the views, sunshine and watching the colourful hubbub below.
The Gompa was equally as stunning with fantastic views of the Stopa.

Boudhanath Stupa has never failed to consistently inspire wonder in me. The magnificent stupa stands tall and transcends time, enveloping the air with tranquillity. This sacred site is not just a visual delight but also an enduring spiritual legacy of Buddhism. However, it would have been wonderful if the sacredness of the place is preserved without the intrusion of various shops. This might also make the place less crowded.

Visiting Boudhanath Stupa is a truly mesmerizing experience. Located just a short distance from the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu, this iconic Buddhist stupa is one of the largest and most sacred in Nepal. The moment you step onto the grounds, you're enveloped by an aura of tranquility and devotion.

The stupa itself is a masterpiece of ancient architecture, with its striking mandala shape, the all-seeing eyes of Buddha, and the vibrant prayer flags fluttering in the wind. Walking around the stupa (known as the kora) is a deeply spiritual experience, as locals and pilgrims chant mantras, spin prayer wheels, and make offerings.

The atmosphere here is peaceful, with a sense of reverence and calm that is rare to find. The surrounding area offers a variety of Tibetan shops, cafes, and small monasteries, perfect for exploring and soaking in the local culture.

Whether you're seeking spiritual enlightenment or simply a peaceful place to reflect, Boudhanath Stupa offers an unforgettable experience. A must-visit for anyone in Kathmandu – it’s an awe-inspiring and serene place that leaves a lasting impression.

Unlike the Monkey Temple where Entrance is FREE, here visitors are required to pay to gain entrance. Fee for foreign visitors is 250 NPR, cheaper for locals.

The Stupa is similar to those of the Monkey Temple. There are no steps to climb here. Along the way are shops and restaurants. Very commercialized areas for my taste!

I am right now staying in Kathmandu for a few days. And Bouddhanath was my top list. BEST PLACE to find the surreal experience inside you. There's crowd, like a big big big crowd but don't care it at all when you feel your inner experience. I just kove Bouddhanath. I love you Kathmandu. You are giving me goosebumps.

A place absolutely not to be missed.... It is beautiful to walk around this structure, browsing in the various shops but what is worth it are the various places where it is possible to attend Buddhist religious rites and observe the wonderful statues inside them. Marvelous!!!!
