Neighbourhood: Silom
Despite the lack of any major tourist attractions, this lively neighborhood is a favorite of many. Whether it's the (somewhat naughty) nightlife of Soi Patpong, the various handicraft night markets or the plethora of dining options that tickle your fancy, a night out in Silom is a must on every itinerary. It's worth a stop during daytime, too: join office workers on a quest to tasty street food during lunch and shop at Silom Complex for a great mix of Thai and international stores. After a day of strolling around the congested sidewalks, a visit to Silom's Lumphini Park, Bangkok's answer to NYC's Central Park, is a welcome change of scenery.

- Gene C1 contributionNo Line, just go. ExcellentThe museum is very small and would make a fairly short and expensive visit if you walked through it by yourself. But he ticket includes a guided tour if you show up when there is a guide available, or is willing to wait a bit for the next tour. With a guide, this turns into a very very interesting, fun, and worthwhile visit, worth every penny. Our guide was an Italian guy, but from overhearing other guides, ALL the guides are good and add a lot of color to the visit that you would not have caught if you walked through by yourself. It comes with a drink, and the place is small and cozy enough where you can have intimate discussions afterwards about the history while having your drink before returning to the BKK heat outside.Visited February 2020Written 24 February 2020
- H ASu Thep, Thailand14 contributionsA Must See in BangkokWow! This museum was one of the most interesting places I’ve been to in Bangkok!! It gave me an idea of what this city was like at the start of the century. Hard to imagine the Patpong red light district started out as a banana farm but our great guide, Andrea, took us through the history of the place as it morphed from banana farm, to business center, international corporation offices, clandestine CIA office, control central for the secret war in Laos, illicit drug center, magnet for rock n rollers and now an adult entertainment center. It also has one of the city’s night markets where they sell knockoffs, souvenirs, t-shirts, watches, etc. So if you visit the museum in the evening you can then take in the market. The museum has many displays of photographs, interactive displays, a video of the CIA’s secret war in Laos, memorabilia all well curated with descriptions of what you’re seeing in Thai and English. For 350 baht you get a personalized tour, great AC and a complimentary beverage. It is a small museum, maybe 5 rooms, but is packed with fascinating things and we spent about 2 hours. The time really flew and we highly recommend it. Hope you get Andrea as your guide!Wow, thank You so much for your detailed and positive review! It makes us so happy and motivated to know that you enjoyed the museum, it’s interactive displays, the narrative from early urbanization through the CIA, popular culture and eventually a red light district. The fact that you stayed with us for 2 hours speaks volumes and puts a happy smile on us. Thank You and hope to see You again.Written 12 March 2020This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 March 2020

If you have an hour or two spare between visiting the usual sights, try and fit this into your schedule, you won’t regret it!Thank You for your review and positive feedback on value for money! During my recent visit to Bangkok, I had the opportunity to visit the Patpong Museum, and I must say, it was a fascinating experience that left me with a deeper understanding of the city's history. The museum offers a unique and informative journey through the vibrant past of one of Bangkok's most renowned areas.

We visited on a Saturday afternoon and with no other customers arriving around the same time we were given a tour to ourselves.
The first half focussed on the history and development of Patpong. The second half was all about the sex industry. In between the two is the Grand Prix bar.
We spent about 1 hour 45 minutes in the museum. We were around an hour in the first part which included a 10 minute film. We then spent about 30 minutes in the bar where we bought some cocktails. The last part took about 20 minutes and will certainly not be to everyone's taste. However, the museum is well worth a visit even for those not interested in the second part.

This is only museum which I visited in Bangkok, so I can't compare it to others. I can however say it was fantastic experience. Took BTS and found it in a dark alley on the 1st floor by following directions on Google maps. Area itself has a different vibe, and museum expands it. Ticket was priced the same for guided tour and for entrance only so I joined small group and our tour guide. Museum itself is small, so if you go on your own, you will pass through rather fast. You need to join the tour and listen the stories which the guide tells, they make all the exhibits alive and set you to feel how Bangkok and Patpong was changing throughout the years. I won't spoil the surprise on how the inside looks like and how what the guide does to capture your attention. He also said they have charity element and help out people in that neighbourhood, if it is true, it is highly regared from my point of view. Must go, must see. History of Bangkok, influence of USA, famous people who visited etc. That very room where museum is used to be a night club, I think where David Bowie shot one of his music videos. Really remarkable place.

A fellow guest at our hotel recommended the museum. It was very interesting. Our guide was a slightly quirky American gentleman who lives in the city, he was full of historical facts and some fun ones too. He was very proud of the Museum and rightly so. There is a lot more to Patpong then just its famous night life but obviously this is what it is known for now. It concluded with some very adult images! There is a little bar in the middle which we would have liked to have stopped at but we felt were pushed a bit to get the whole guided tour done, so we did not actually bother to go back for a drink even though we could. (we were hungry and had dinner plans) The surprising history of the area was a revelation. Its a fun place to visit. Highly recommend.

Got great history lesson of the area and learned about the people that shaped the Patong area. You also learn a bit more about the development of the sex industry which was unique. Easy and interesting tour with narration and visuals as aids. Highly recommend if your in the area.

The wealth of knowledge provided is insurmountable. Even as an American, I learned American history I was never aware of. If you are in Bangkok you need to stop by and tour this museum.

We were looking for quirky things to do in Bangkok and this museum really hit the spot.
Our guide was very informative and with good humour. The history of the area is fascinating and the exhibition items were very well laid out. I was expecting a seedy experience but it was not that at all.
I loved the David Bowie section, being from a town where Bowie also visited once (and we now have a statue commemorating it).
Highly recommended!

This was a very disappointing experience and I would not recommend it. We had an American tour guide called Randy. The way Randy told the history of Patpong was predominantly just about the Americans who had visited (Jim Thompson, CIA soldiers and American military, multinational companies, and David Bowie). The curating also reflected this focus.
The tour was about 1 hour or 1.5 hours long and we had no choice but to take it. When we wandered off (bored) Randy snapped and wouldn’t let us look at the exhibition alone.
Randy made some very strange comments in support of US military war criminals in Laos.
The tour ended with a very transphobic display, which forces visitors to guess the genitals of Thai women. When we refused to play the game, Randy got very defensive. The perspectives of sex workers was also absent.
This could be such an incredible museum of an area with rich history but Randy felt like an inappropriate guide and teller of these stories. The curating felt very disconnected from the Thai people who live and work in this area.

The Museum is in the heart of the Bangruk district, between Silom and Suriwong road. There are plenty of activities to do before and after your visit to the Patpong Museum, such as riding a boat on the Chao Phraya river to the Grand Palace or shopping at the MBK and Siam Paragon. Lumpini Park is 300 meters walk away and much much more.
