Home to almost 10,000 vendors, you’ll find everything from vintage sneakers to comic books and Thai handicrafts being sold here. You name it, Chatuchack probably sells it. We have just returned from the market and the memory is fresh in our minds as well as the pain in our feet. Like many, we decided to go based upon the YouTube Videos.
It's only a 10 minute walk from the Mo Chit BTS Train; just follow the crowd. Firstly you will never see everything but there again, all the stalls look the same. Some sell great items and others sell cheap crap. You pay the money and take your chance. Nevertheless, we did spend around 2000 baht. Bartering is essential, even if you say "What is your best price?" We only saw 2 or 3 rubbish bins so be prepared to walk around, carrying your rubbish. We smoke, so again, beware. Move outside the market for a quick smoke which is fair enough. Get used to the heat!!! Drink plenty of water, take a rucksack to free your hands. It's an experience, not to be missed but ignore the hype. Its good, but not that good. We will be returning the the MBK Centre to buy our take home presents.

As reluctant as westerners seem to be to bargain, just get over it. Admittedly things in Thailand are very cheap and you won’t go bankrupt even if you pay the inflated prices that the vendors ask, but after a while, you might get tired of paying more than everyone else does. And after all, it’s a sport and a way of life there.

The market is open just on the weekends and I heard somewhere Friday night was also included, though I did not try going then. We went on Saturday one weekend and Sunday another weekend. Showing up at 0900 meant that it was much less crowded but it also meant that a lot of vendors had not yet come, so there was only a small percentage of the merchandise that would eventually emerge there. Our eventual strategy would be to show up during full business hours, but dive deep into the second or third row of stalls on the theory that most of the tourists will get held up at the first row and the ones further in will be less crowded. Our first foray did give us an idea of how merchandise was more or less organized within the rows, that is similar types of merchandise were sometimes clustered together, though this was not consistent.

There is lots of apparel, accessories, home goods, and food. Most things won’t be marked with prices, meaning that every price is up for negotiation. Even stuff that’s marked can be negotiated, especially if you are buying multiple items. Any time a vendor agrees immediately to your price, be aware that you did not bid low enough. Your best bid is one that leaves the vendor reluctant (or at least he/she has the good manners to look reluctant for the sake of the show) and he might ask someone else if the price is acceptable. They might even let you start to turn away to leave, then pounce on you to agree to your price. That’s the look you want. If they let you actually walk away, your price really was too low, at least that day and for that vendor.

At the back of the shopping area, there’s an indoor mall space with more stalls and a few massage places. Importantly there are also bathrooms there. And there is lots of street food and beverages everywhere. Bring your own water, but have a Thai milk tea or fruit smoothie and meat on a stick. And remember to bring a light nylon backpack to stash your goods. They’ll give you bags, but you’ll eventually get tired of holding those bags in your hands and you’ll want your hands free to browse.

Great place to visit in Bangkok, give yourself at least 2/3 hours minimum if you want to look around. So many stalls you could spend a full day browsing. Everything from clothing, shoes, bags, souvenirs, and loads of food stalls. Bring toilet roll though as the toilets here don’t have any.

Been to markets like these in pretty much every country I’ve been to. This one is huge and has everything you want as a tourist, and of course you leave with more things you didn’t even ever plan on buying. You can’t haggle as well here for the price and it’s quite set, as they know with so many people coming here, if you don’t buy it, someone else will. 3mins walk from BTS station, has a nice park near it and a big shopping centre with more “official” shops near it. Toilets are dirty though and don’t have toilet paper, visit shopping centre near it if you want toilet during your time at market
