You can't come to Chiang Mai and not see this. One of the entrances to the old city. A main gate, a meeting point and buzzing particularly at night. Lot's of coffee shops and restaurants near by.

I have seen some fabulous walled cities with amazing gates and tones of history. Cartagena, Colombia for example is incredible. This place was nothing special. There have a few sections that are still standing mostly because they have been restored, some that are getting ready to fall and others gone all together. It is a large 1.6km square with a moat, full of old and newer temples, monuments, shops, bars and restaurants. I would recommend see Wat Chedi Luang & the Sunday Night Market which is inside the complex.

Personally, if you are not in the neighbourhood to see something else I would make a special trip to see just this.

The best way to check the whole thing is to start at one end of the market and walk down the Loi Kroh Road to the Tha Phae Gate. Tha Phae Gate is an epicenter for Chiang Mai tourism, boasting multitude of hotels, bars, restaurants, cafes, and massage parlors. Tha Pae Gate is one of the most famous landmarks in Chiang Mai and is part of the crumbling city wall which once acted as a fortress for the Old City

Romantic, Beautiful, Enchanting - these are the three words that I could sum up experiencing one of Chiang Mai's historic gates - The Tha Phae gate. When the city was founded by King Mangrai in 1296 these gates together with other gates (Chang Puak, Chiang Mai, Pratu Soan Dok) protect the old city. Tha Phae gate lies on the east of the city and made of Red bricks stone. Like the other gates, the original water moat is still surrounding it. Today Tha Phae gate is like the central square of Chiang Mai's old city where tourists and locals alike relax, enjoy, taking photos/videos, celebrate and just have fun. Many street food stalls around the square, artists displaying their craft and skills and cultural events take place here including the Loy Krathong festival. There are plenty of hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars and shops around the area. Tha Phae road also starts here entering the old city, where many of its ancient beautiful temples still stands there. During Sunday Walking street night market this gate serves as the core point where the market begins. Chiang Mai is the cultural, artistic and modern capital of Northern Thailand and till today it has preserved its fine arts, glory and beauty. The Gates are its roots preserving and protecting it for the past 700 years and more.

Always nice to see a bit of history restored. You can walk around the whole of the old city square and admire all the gates of old Chiang Mai. The square is approximately 2km square (but don't quote me on that). Worth the walk!

The gate is a rebuilt portion of the old wall around the old town. It is a fascinating bit of history and has a public square out front where people gather in the evening

What once was a gate to the ‘Old City’ is now a public square with tons of pigeons, people watching and a gateway to massage parlors, bars and a bustling city center. Not a lot to see but you can appreciate the beauty of a crumbling wall
And the significance it had many years ago.

Lovely old gateway with big open area leading to the moat. Hundeds of pigeons of all colours and tourists from all over the world taking photos or posing for selfies. When the pigeons are startled there are great reactions in the crowd

Crowds gather here to take photos and, at New Year’s Eve, to await the midnight hour.not the best place to appreciate the wall. Walk along the moat and you may find one.

Tha Phae Gate is ok at best wall looks decades old not centuries, clearly has a major part of local history but visually nothing specular.

People seem to enjoy the pigeons more on my few visits, pigeons very friendly and land on your hands for interesting photos.

Have a look at so you have seen but it’s only a 5 minute attraction.
