The gate is not much to see in itself, but is a great landmark for exploring tghis part of the city - from the nighht bazare to wat chedi luang and all around

Walk through it and marvel in mans ingenuity then walk down and through shopping / bar / restaurant street for a retail experience. Can get very busy and very hot. Watch your bags and wallets. and do indulge in the street food its delicious.

Its really Nice place. Center of lot of activities also. Like when we were there, there was free hair cut ongoing. Stage setup where had come function and as u cross, U will enter old city with lot of attractions and life.

As far as I know the lanterns are really a big deal on New Years Eve. During other times of the year I could not answer with any certainty.
