"Visiting Vietnam without listening to a rhythm of ca tru traditional music means that you've not discovered the real spirit of Vietnam yet." "Free yourself and get immersed in ca tru while enjoying performance by Thang Long Ca Tru Theatre. It is a voluntary, non-profit group of ca tru musicians founded in 2006. Long-time history, unique instruments, impressive music tones and meaningful song lyrics made ca tru recognized by UNESCO as the World Intangible Cutural Heritage." "This is a concert for about 70 persons held in an old temple in the old quarter of Hanoi. They are good about explaining the instruments and the history of the music. They even let you come try out the instruments. The hot tea and little cake is a nice touch at intermission" "The singers had such dear, expressive faces and sang with such intensity. The instruments were unique and had a real otherworldly quality to them and the presentation and overall performance were of a very high quality. I felt delighted, entertained and educated. Well worth going to see."-Visited wrote The show is on every Thursday and Saturday night at 8pm at 28 Hang Buom (Quan De Temple).

Ca Tru is a refined version of the Vietnamese musical tradition. Very different to classical western forms of music but equally complex and skilful. This company tailors the performance for a western audience with explanations of the themes for each piece and the history of the medium. Our audience was only four which made for and intimate and privileged experience.

We just happened to see this show while wandering around the old quarter, so decided to go back another evening. The music was interesting, but it was well presented with descriptions of the history, the instruments and how they learned to perform. The building is worth a visit even without the music.

Wow, thanks to the other reviewers on TA, I decided to find this place and go to this show. As with finding anything in Hanoi, that took some doing, studying the map, looking for the address, although when you arrive, you find out it is obvious. Held in an ancient building, this ancient artistic music is like stepping back in... More

The show was amazing and the music was divine. Love it. I was a bit sad to hear that the music almost disappear for 100 years because of the Vietnam war. I'm glad they were able to preserve it

very unique show. Small stage - viewers sit in front of a pond. the show is in Vietnamese. The puppeteers work from behind a screen with poles that has puppets attached to the other end.

This was one of the most authentic experiences in Hanoi. Held thrice a week, this show accepts only 25 audience members per show. The event was held in a restored ancient music house. The event encourages the revival and development of the ancient Cat Ru music houses and has various music students playing 10th-15th century musical instruments. The show is... More

The music presentation at the Thang Long theatre is well worth the time and certainly worth the effort. The small theatre is a delightful venue, even though it was a little hot when we attended. The musicians tasks are explained and you even get a chance to try your hand at the different instruments. We highly recommend a visit. And...if... More

The actual show was pretty entertaining. Unfortunately I was sat behind someone who insisted on recording large parts of the show on their iPhone held up above their head -- this was right in my line of sight. They were totally immune from me asking them to put their phone down (they were northern European), and even me physically trying... More

A good handful of musicians bring Vietnamese ancient music closer to anyone who is interested. They are taking big efforts, play with passion and very patient to provide background information. You can try out the instruments after the official part of the show. It is an experience to expand your current harmony feeling...

A very enriching and culturally moving performance of an historical art that Vietnam is trying to restore. The performance is in a nice historical building and you feel close to the performers. The length of the performance is just right and there are opportunities for the audience to interact with the performers. We wish the art can continue to restore... More
