Houey Hong Vocational Training Centre trains Lao women in weaving, natural dyes, sewing, tailoring and business administration. Beautiful handwoven silk items are made on the premises, along with other products in a range of Lao textiles. Visitors can see the weaving and natural dyes, as part of the every day working environment at the centre. There is a retail shop, where handmade items of excellent quality can be purchased at reasonable prices. For those interested in textiles, or looking for a fun hands-on experience, there is a range of workshops ranging from a half day, full day, to several days. You can learn about natural dyes, and different weaving techniques.

My fourteen year old daughter and I elected to take a half-day natural dying class, where we each tie-dyed a silk staff. Actually, I tie-dyed two as my younger daughter was unwell and couldn't come along so I made one to take back to her. We were collected from the centre of town and driven out to the Centre, which is... More

Went as a group of 2 and did the morning silk dyeing only. Our driver was absolutely amazing and gave us a lot of information regarding Lao culture and things to see while we were staying in Vientiane. On arrival we were greeted quickly and given our white/blank scarves. They have sample patterns for you to pick from, and the... More

They arrange for air-con van pick up at the True Color in Vientiane town. Had a great time learning to dye the scarf. Nice quiet place. Depending on your creativity, the scarf design and color turn out will be unique. The staff will brought us around the place while waiting for the scarf to dry.

My kids (aged 7 and 9) loved it. It is not all kids proofed by western standards, so it's better to watch your little one, but both my kids loved the experience. The ladies who were leading the activity were patient, but the kids were sometimes asking questions about the process that they could not answer due to their English... More

Taking a full day to dye scarfs and weave our own was fun, but tiring. The dying is done in the morning. You get to choice your pattern and color, then do the actual dying (which is done differently depending on the color you choose). Colors green and purple take extra long to dye and if you're doing the full... More

Great experience. Good teachers, helpful and kind. Choose your own pattern and colors for a scarf, then they walk you through making it yourself. Great fun and good learning experience. Even my 8 year old boy loved it.

Had an incredible experience. I was the only one on this morning class, the pick up and drop off were smooth. The class itself was excellent and the two teachers, Mimi and Momo, were super nice and had great English. My two products turned out well. I helped crush the nuts to dye my scarf and it's pretty funny how... More

We had a wonderful visit to the Houey Hong Vocational Center. The staff was more than nice and helped us pick out patterns for dying our own silk scarves. The end product was beautiful and the experience was great. I highly recommend a visit.

I went for a half day and was still able to do weaving and dying. It was very interesting and the lady who worked with me explained everything she could to me in English. She also was always around to help me if I got stuck at a certain moment. I would recommend this quiet place to anyone who can... More

Both the weaving and dying activities were a little superficial; I was expecting to go deeper in the time available - still it was fun to do and we were looked after very well. Taxis in Lao seem inordinately expensive compared to Thailand - next time I think I'd try and take a bus ;)
