Main attraction in the city
Jun 2019
This is something not to be missed if you are in the city centre. Not the most attractive I've seen but its good to just stroll around the square if 1 has the time. There could be activities held here at times.

Just your average central square.
Sep 2019
Useful central point for meeting etc. Nice square with a variety of interesting statues. Would say don’t go out of your way to visit it, but it is basically the centre of Ulaanbaatar, so your hotel will probably be close to it anyway.

Interesting

The square is huge and surrounded by older Soviet style buildings, modern glass skyscrapers and some statues. In winter there were ice sculptures and an ice rink. On a clear day you can see the mountains the background - very atmospheric.

The square in winter
Jan 2020
A square with interesting architecture around it in any event, we visited in the late afternoon and had a great time photographing the ice sculptures in the square.

Wonderful place to wander around amongst the ice monuments and local attractions. Located in the heart of the city and close to our hotel (Shangri La) along with many of the local restaurants and bars.

In the center of Ulan Batar isthe statue of Chinggis Kahn overlooking the square. Due to the coronavirus and cold, this square was empty. But it had a dozen ice sculptures and an ice rink that was framed in ice. Last time we saw the square, it was Autumn and the square was filled with tourists, hawkers and performing acts.

A large open square with a horse and rider statue
Nov 2019
Sukhbaatar square is situated in the front of the Government Palace and is the pivotal point for of Ulaanbaatar city. All major, governmental building, and major shops stores and restaurants of interested are located within a two mile radius of the square. If one stands in the center of the square and looks around you will see on the south side the old Lenin Club building located right next to the modern blue sail shaped skyscraper, Blue Sky Tower. You will also see the traffic congestion on Peace Avenue. On the western side of the square is the headquarters of the Ulaanbaatar Bank, Ulaanbaatar City Administration building (City Hall), the headquarters of Golomt Bank, the Mongolian Stock Exchange building, the Mongolian Telecommunications Building, and the Central Post Office. The north is occupied by the Government Palace. The east side of the square is the most interesting and congested side. One will find the Central Cultural Palace Building and State Ballet and Opera House (pink and white building), Central Towers (a glass and metal office and shopping skyscraper). Just east of the Government Palace, on the square's north-east corner, sits the Galleria Ulaanbaatar Shopping Mall. Numerous other buildings are crammed into the area. The square was named after the revolutionary leader Damdin Sukhbaatar, who led the Mongolian force during the independence movement against the Chinese occupation in 1921. In the middle of the square, there is a 14 meter tall artificial granite equestrian statue of Sukhbaatar astride his horse. The monument was built in 1946 by Mongolian sculptor Sonomyn Choimbol, In 2013 due to political infighting between the parties in the Mongolian parliament, the square's name was changed to Chinggis Square to honor Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan is considered the founding father of Mongolia. In 2016 the square was once again renamed to Sukhbaatar Square. One will find city maps showing both names. It can be confusing. The square is a gathering point for locals as well as tourist. You might witness a wedding party or traditionally dressed locals celebrating a special moment. One will always find some type of activate going on in the square. During winter, the square is a cold dismal place and one can observe bundled up pedestrians rushing through the square to get to there destination. One Friday morning, several kids where engaged in a snowball fight. I got the worst of the fight as I was pelted with snowballs. Mongolian kids 1 / Tourist 0. Truly a lot of fun for both sides. The square is exactly 250 meters on all 4 sides and is paved in concrete tiles. In winter these tiles are icy and very slippery. Use caution or you could take a nasty fall. Definitely a must visit site while in Ulaanbaatar. Would suggest an 1-2 hour visit depending on the weather conditions at that time.

Sukhbaatar Square
Sep 2019
This square is also known as Sukhbaatar Square, located at the city centre of Ulaanbaatar, in front of Parliament with statues of Genghis Khan and other statues of notable Mongolian leaders. It is a landmark in the city and meeting point for the locals. It is also a place for congregation during Nadaam Festival. It is walking distance (5-mins walk) to our accommodation, Khuvsgul Lake Hotel, Mongolian National Museum and the famous Mongolian Restaurant with sumptuous Mongolian cuisine called “Modern Nomads”. We came here when we were on the way to the national Museum and the restaurant mentioned. Hence, it’s good to check this place out only when you are nearby. It is cooler in the late afternoon when it’s not too hot to visit this open space public square.

Central Location but not Must See
Nov 2019
This is a nice place to visit with a very central location. The statues of Ghengis Khan show his significance to the people of Mongolia. This is a large square outside of the government headquarters that bears a resemblance to Tiananmen Square in Beijing. If you are in this area it is a nice place to visit, but not essential.

A "Should See" but not a "Must See"
Oct 2019
Genghis Khan Square is the center of the center. It is a large open square that offers a good perspective on this part of the city. By itself the Square is not spectacular but it is work spending 1/2 hour taking in the surroundings.
