Let me confess first- i am a sucker for museums! And since we had a day to kill in Colombo with an fixed itinerary, decided to make this place our first stop in our Sri Lankan itinerary. The museum in set in an impressive colonial building (renovations were happening when we visited). The grounds are vast and filled with big... More

Columbo national Museum house some of the oldest antiquities of the Ceylon area some dating many centuries ago. The biggest problem is that the museum itself is incredibly dated and not enticing for history lovers. There is no air conditioning and ventilation is incredibly poor. Lighting of all the artifacts is limited at best and the flow through the museum... More

Best place to visit and witness history. We have limited time so we just saw it passing by. You may ask your driver to stop for half an hour if you have time.

Sri Lanka has an amazingly interesting history, therefore it was a small disappointment how this museum filled its expectations. However, it leaves quite many empty spots, especially in from the colonial times abd the modern times (or was the museum in renovation?) I do not know as the signs or personnnel didn't tell this. Still, there is a good potential... More

The museum is a majestic building but when we visited it was under renovation. Lots of history mostly pre-colonial era. We didn't get to see much about the colonial era. The presentation wasn't well organised.

Colombo museum is the largest and the main museum in sri lanka. If you want to see every corner of the museum i suggest you to keep a whole day for it. There is lot to learn from the place and the antiquities but the informations displayed near those are very small and uninteresting. Hope they will take actions to... More

I felt a bit let down by this museum. While it did present some interesting information, much of it was in a very dense, academic style that made little attempt to accommodate the lay visitor. It was difficult for educated adults, and would be completely impenetrable for kids (we saw a class of Sri Lankan schoolchildren breeze through without reading... More

You will come to know about the great kings who ruled colombo by visiting this Museum. They preserve lot of artifacts from the ancient history which is really great to watch. Old coins, weapons used, Ornaments, Dress, cooking utensils were all displayed there and it was really good to watch. Apart from that there were lot of things we can... More

The National Museum have a lot of good historical information about Sri Lanka and it is very well organized. We highly recommend this place if you want to understand the history of Sri Lanka and see a lot of good artifacts from this country.
