This years marks its 80th year and it sure looks it. Not much of the foreigner entrance fee (Rs. 2,500) finds its way back into development. Like with all zoos, better to arrive morning or afternoon to see the animals do something other than sleeping. You can get around quickly if your only have 1-2 hours, but could spend longer... More

Its heart rending to say that the current state of the zoo is in very poor condition. The cleanliness and hygiene is very low.And theres not much of animals to be seen at present. Even the ones remaining look very unhealthy and not well kept. It truly is a sad sight for animal lovers.

Lot of variety of species. Mammals, birds, serpents, reptiles, butterflies. need at least 4,5 hours to cover all. The restaurant inside was not good. There was a small area to relax with kids.

If you like watching clearly distressed animals kept in cruel and inhumane conditions, then this is the place for you! The chimpanzees, orangutans, elephants are clearly in a bad way, and there are no staff around to stop the visitors constantly feeding all sorts of rubbish to the animals. A horror show.

I will just start with a straight "avoid". I was taken here by a Sri Lankan family friend, who told us we were going out for the day in Colombo. I don't mean to be so harsh on somewhere but it's not hard to see when animals are suffering. If you care about the welfare of animals at all, you... More

Very clean and well maintained gardens and walkways with large trees providing much needed shelter from the sun. Easy to find your way around with map and sign posts. Was sad to see the animals, many in poor condition and small enviroment. Over priced for tourists but many locals and families enjoying a day out.

Terrible conditions for the animals, bordering on squalid in some cases. Could not wait to leave. In particular, those poor, majestic elephants chained up, moving from foot to foot, was very upsetting to me. I would never go back there again ... too depressing.

The National Zoo needs to maintain the facility to keep up the place. The place needs more manpower to clean up the place as well as improve the facilities. You can see garbage all over the place. Most of the foreigners complain its not worth for the price they spend. Which we have to agree sadly. some of the cages... More
