Sometimes in Istiklal Caddesi the historic tramvay is a real obstacle when a lot of people are squeezing their way through the street. Then they have to step aside and let the tram pass by. Maybe some youngsters are just "trainsurfing" on it. Taking the...More

It works and it is a bit unusual, what more can you say. My wife and I are pensioners and even on this trip young Turks offered us a seat. They respect their elders here.

Istiklal Street is usually one hoard of people. We were expecting it to be busy late on a Sunday morning with weekend breakfasters. Not the case. We arrived at the lower end of the street just as the tram did and hopped right on. There...More

We walked from the Tunel up Istiklal Caddesi to Taksim Square and took the Tram back. Whilst you may have to wait and queue, it is fun. One seat each side with lots standing but a piece of history. You will need a loaded Istanbulkart...More

When you in Galata, you need to make this ride. Tram runs from Taksim to Tunel through the shopping street very slowly. You turn back time how local transportation was when these trams were all over town. Tram runs day time, not at night.

CRAMMED. That's the experience. Walking İstiklal Avenue is the best way to experience this tourist mecca of Istanbul. Lots to see, and don't forget the side alleys, that's where the real interesting, lower rent, shops/cafes are. Tram? When you're from Melbourne, Australia, they're no big...More

Istanbul’s most famous street, pedestrianized Istiklal
Caddesi (Independence Avenue), throbs day and night
and offers a fantastic array of architectural sights,
shops, treats, and throngs upon teeming throngs of
people. At the avenue’s northeastern end is expansive
Taksim Square, thought by many to be the very heart of
the city, with many of Turkey’s most renowned
restaurants and some of Europe’s most happening
