Sufi Music Concert & Whirling Dervishes Ceremony

Istanbul Whirling Dervishes hosts regular Sufi music concerts and whirling dervish performances at the Dervish Dede Efendi House in Sultanahmet. This is a spiritual and informative tribute to 13th century mystic, poet and philosopher Mevlana C. Rumi and his followers.

The Istanbul Whirling Dervishes programme starts with an introduction speech about Rumi, followed by Sufi Music and the 4-salam whirling dervish ceremony, giving life to 800 years tradition on the stage with their determination and faith for being a lifelong follower of Mevlevi tradition. Guests are welcome to ask questions and talk to the musicians and dervishes after the ceremony.

The Istanbul Whirling Dervishes whirling dervish ceremony is performed every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 7.30Pm at the Dervish Dede Efendi House in Sultanahmet. The venue has capacity for 100 and prior reservations are recommended.

This is more of a spiritual visit rather than cultural one! I had tears in my eyes at the end , not that everyone is expected to. :) They are performing these ritual movements and are totally disconnected from well , everything else. You need to make sure what to expect before visiting , my friends did not enjoy and... More

This is a one hour performance of mystical music and whirling dance. The show begins with 30 minutes of music followed by an exhibition of whirling dancers. They spin for most of 30 minutes without losing balance or missing a step. It is mesmerising. This show is a must see.

I wasn't as bowled over as I wanted to be by this, but I'm glad I went. It was beautiful and enchanting and a good insight in Sufism. It is authentic and sincere - no photos, please! - and the music was beautiful. I'm glad I did this on my first visit to Turkey, but I don't think I'll need... More

I knew Sufi music and enjoyed its hypnotism so I really wanted to see dervish dancers whirling at the sound of this music once in my life. I've been amazed by the ceremony! I asked to be sitting in the first row when I booked so I felt connected to the dancers. It's slow and hypnotising;it's beautiful and apaising. I didn't... More

this isn't a tourist show or a performance, so be prepared: it's a genuinely authentic, deeply felt Sufi ceremony where the musicians and dervishes are graciously allowing you to be in the room with them while they explore one of the core elements of Sufi mysticism. you will need to book in advance through their websit, and they will give... Hard to express some feelings but I like to point out that the experience I had about this event was highlight of my Turkey trip. This is not a touristic event but an original ritual that represents it in a qunie way. Strongly suggested.

thru this beautiful dance of five dancers. this is not for everyone. if you want a clear explanation of what is happening, you will not get it. this is a dance of evolution. it is a mystical journey. it is beautiful. be patient and watch what is in front - don't try to figure it out. I feel it is... More

I can't really call this a show because its not. If you're hoping for a show, you'll be disappointed as its not meant to be entertainment. But if you're looking at something spiritual and go with an open mind, you'll be transported to a beautiful place. I can't think of how else to describe this but this is definitely an... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
