We were directed to this market by our guidebook, which marks it as one of the sights not to be missed in Jerusalem.
Knowing that the market gradually turns into a huge food court in the evening, we deliberately arrived here at the end of the afternoon to observe the metamorphosis.
We perceived the market as colorful and lively, but after all no more so than many others in the Near East.
What really amazed us is the liveliness of the scene at dinner time: a very pleasant place of attraction has been created, due to the enormous influx of people and the variety and richness of the refreshment places.
Of course, we haven't neglected to dine here, in a small but cozy restaurant of Israeli cuisine.
We understood that the origin of this beautiful market as a structured place dates back to the time of the British mandate, between the two world wars.
The presence of the Jerusalem light rail (tramway) greatly facilitated our arrival in the neighborhood, and then our departure to the hotel.

Awesome but totally hectic experience. There seemed to be organized tours which were annoying because they blocked the movement of people, but also might be the way to go because they seem to be keen charging tourists a premium. Can leave a bad taste in your mouth. Consider making a list of what you want in advance as the experience can throw you off your game. I panic bought $170 worth of halva. Luckily it tastes amazing.

Machane Yehuda is a series of stalls where vendors sell mostly food, although there are a few other items sold, especially Judaica for tourists.

There are huge displays of candies, pastries, halva, fruits, vegetables, coffees,breads/rolls, ice cream.
There are also a few sit-down bars and eateries, but it’s mostly people walking through the aisles of vendors, more like a flea market in the states, but covered by a roof.

Your mouth will water just walking through.

If you don’t stop to buy, it will only take 15-20 minutes to walk through, but you *will* want to taste just about everything. It all looks so fresh and delicious.

Great market, you'll enjoy walking around. Lots of fruits, vegetables, bakeries etc. but also plenty of restaurants and bars
If you go on Friday mornings it get very busy but the atmosphere is incredible with all the locals finished their last errands before Shabbat, street singers, restaurants packed etc.
On Saturday evenings only the bars are open and it becomes a party place

We explored this market on our last day in Jerusalem (wish we had more time!) and enjoyed it. We had a really great lunch there and just enjoyed taking in the atmosphere. There were lots of shops and places for food as you would expect.

Came to walk the market and try an array of foods for breakfast. I also bought some fruit, nuts, and pastries to eat while visiting other sites during the day. The market was crowded on my visit, but that is a sign of its favourable reputation.

It’s a lively place that offers many places to eat, several stores of fruits, vegetables and spices. Although it’s a bit expensive compared to other cities I visited.

There is a market outside and another one that is under roof attached. Many cafés and bars offer foods of the city Jerusalem, I recommend to try them in order to have a culinary taste of the city.

It’s several stops away by public transportation from the rail station, or about 20 minutes walk.

One of the nicest markets I've been to, and I've been to a lot of markets.. :) Mostly food, little restaurants, cafés..can be pretty busy (especially during lunch and dinner times) but the walking alley between the market stalls is wide and is being cleaned regularly. Here and there very loud music, young people having fun especially in the evening. Not cheap, but good quality food and cheaper than in restaurants/shops in the (Old) city.

If you have ever shopped at a farmer's market, this is a farmer's market on steroids! There is something for everyone and it seems that everyone is there, especially on Thursdays and Fridays. Fruits, vegetables, breads, pastries, candies, nuts, spices, deli items, fish, poultry, wine, beer, coffee, souvenirs and restaurants. I'm sure I've left out categories but you get the idea! Do not miss this market, as it's an experience to remember.
