- betteskidBoston, Massachusetts1,310 contributionsWorth exploring - great marketWe explored this market on our last day in Jerusalem (wish we had more time!) and enjoyed it. We had a really great lunch there and just enjoyed taking in the atmosphere. There were lots of shops and places for food as you would expect.Visited November 2022Written 16 December 2022
- PerrineTel Aviv, Israel49 contributionsA must in JerusalemGreat market, you'll enjoy walking around. Lots of fruits, vegetables, bakeries etc. but also plenty of restaurants and bars If you go on Friday mornings it get very busy but the atmosphere is incredible with all the locals finished their last errands before Shabbat, street singers, restaurants packed etc. On Saturday evenings only the bars are open and it becomes a party placeVisited December 2022Written 26 December 2022
- KosherAndGlutenFreeNew Jersey290 contributionsMouth watering fun foodsMachane Yehuda is a series of stalls where vendors sell mostly food, although there are a few other items sold, especially Judaica for tourists. There are huge displays of candies, pastries, halva, fruits, vegetables, coffees,breads/rolls, ice cream. There are also a few sit-down bars and eateries, but it’s mostly people walking through the aisles of vendors, more like a flea market in the states, but covered by a roof. Your mouth will water just walking through. If you don’t stop to buy, it will only take 15-20 minutes to walk through, but you *will* want to taste just about everything. It all looks so fresh and delicious.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 December 2022
- Karl & JoshNew York City, New York6 contributionsAmazing but insaneAwesome but totally hectic experience. There seemed to be organized tours which were annoying because they blocked the movement of people, but also might be the way to go because they seem to be keen charging tourists a premium. Can leave a bad taste in your mouth. Consider making a list of what you want in advance as the experience can throw you off your game. I panic bought $170 worth of halva. Luckily it tastes amazing.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 January 2023
- stephrabNew York City, New York720 contributionsDay One Thing - Night Another - Come for BothThis is a MUST when visiting Jerusalem to get a real feel for the people, not the history. The best time to visit is Friday morning. Everyone is shopping for Shabbat. There are free tastes everywhere. Everything is so fresh. The full mix of Jerusalem Jewish population shops here. Night is a completely different experience. Lots of “hip” and loud restaurants which attract a younger “hip” crowd. The market is open. The contrast is stark and can be bewildering, but also worth the visit.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 5 March 2023
- MHBSoDakSioux Falls, South Dakota678 contributionsSuper fun!I love markers. The Shuk is so much fun. Great food, drinks and people watching. Lots of vendors will give out samples. Way better than Costco!! This is fun for all ages. I was able to use my mobility scooter in almost all areas. Entry and exit was the only trick and wasn’t bad.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 14 March 2023
- TravelibrarianIstanbul, Türkiye185 contributionsLoved it! Great for tourists without feeling touristy.A real market, bustling with locals doing their shopping. There are also many little bars and restaurants serving great food and local craft beer. Pull up a stool and watch the locals shopping and hanging out. Easy place to get into conversations with people. Very enjoyable atmosphere.Visited March 2023Written 24 March 2023
- arvind1000Pune, India2,262 contributionsVibrant and colourful market to walk around or to earYou must this market - which is vibrant, with myriad of colours from fruits, vegetables, spices and nuts, lively with lots of locals and tourists. You may come to shop or to eat. There are a number of inexpensive restaurants and bakeries and the market is crowded whether you come in the morning or eveningVisited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 April 2023
- NoraatcSudbury, Massachusetts34,941 contributionsThe colors of JerusalemOn our very first day we went out for an early dinner at Mahaneh Yehuda Market. We wanted to try authentic Israeli food, hummus, shakshuka, falafel, etc. and we found all of them at the small eatery, Hummus Eliyahu. We had hummus shakshuka and hummus sabich with delicious fluffy pitas. My kind of food… our hummus had such a delicate creamy texture and was so flavorful. We also tried bourekas, puff pastry stuffed with cheese, at the small shop, Azura. The market is a feast of flavors, colors, and characters too. So many cafes, bars, shops… Amazing fruits and vegetables, endless variety of bread, pastries, halva, baklava, spices, tea mixes… And music!Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 April 2023
- rzfuertesFort Lauderdale, Florida42 contributionsFoodie Heaven!!!This outdoor food market was a must to see! Hundreds of food vendors from all over, selling everything you could want to eat! We opted for a restaurant, on the advice of our taxi driver, called Azura, which was outstanding! Every dish we ordered was delicious and home-cooked. We took everything back with us to the hotel, because we couldn't bear to leave even one bite! A must!Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 September 2023

An amazing cultural experience! Full of life, with great stalls and restaurants. A must-do in Jerusalem. We were there one a Friday afternoon, so perhaps the vibe was extra lively because it was right before Shabbat (not sure!).

I didn't "visit." I basically walked through, sometimes more than once a day, most days for a ten day stay in Jerusalem. So it's a world-class market for good reason in that it's incredibly beautiful and yes, busy, especially on Friday, and also, the food is great (it's a little overpriced though, especially for produce and fresh juice; if you don't know the prices, you will be overcharged for many things, not because you are being scammed I don't think in that the prices are often posted, but just that they are higher than some other markets for the same things). Expect someone did charge me $8 USD for about 3 oz. of pomegranate juice, which was annoying. At any rate, I wouldn't sit and eat here given the crowds. But to takeaway is a miracle. There is a little empanada place that had the most delicious empanadas ever -- I had curried eggplant, mushroom, and spinach ones for 60 shekels.
The only minor issue is that so many spreads and such aren't in English, and so you may have no idea what you are buying, just a head's up because I was often struggling to figure out what was a fish paste vs. an eggplant spread (I like one of these and not the other). Salespeople aren't always incredible helpful here. Sometimes I used Google translate on my phone with luck.
It's great for hard to find produce, and if you are self-catering, you will be in Heaven, although your wallet may be a little lighter than you expect. But a good scene. Fun place to people watch as well as it attracts a very diverse crowd.

Go hungry. The market has a great selection of snacks, and other food. You can eat for a few days at the market. It also has fruits, vegetables and some high end other foods, such as olive oil and salt.

I purposely went to the market on a Friday afternoon. It was exceptionally busy. So if you are going with young children, be prepared to hold their hand tightly!
The assortment of food, spices, drinks, and everything else is fantastic. I was even able to get a gluten-free challah for Shabbat at Gluless.
Now that I have gone on a Friday afternoon, I will be honest and tell you that it was an insane decision. I will definitely returned to the market the next time I am in Jerusalem, but not right before Shabbat. However, if you want to show your children how observant people get ready for Shabbat, this is the place to go.

שווה לשאול במוקד העירייה לתשובה מדוייקת, בכל אופן אמני מניח כמו כל שאר השווקים, יש המכשירים ופותחים, יש המעדיפים לצאת לחופשה בחול המועד.חג שמח
Is this open during the Shabbot? Thanks.

I'm planning to travel to Israel in November do you think it's safe?

Absolutely! I felt safer in Israel than I did in many other places that I have visited around the world. I also felt safer than I do walking around cities in the US, including New York, at night. I was there for 2 weeks last November and not once did I feel unsafe. Enjoy Israel! It is beautiful.

I am planning to visit the Mahane Yehuda Market in April with my family. Does anyone know which shops serve gluten free options for my celiac daughter.

Hi Lisa! I envy you for visiting Israel in April 😄 I've stayed 23 days last January/February and I was short of time, there are so many things to see!!! And weather will be great by then...
I know Agas 1 restaurant in Mahane Yehuda serves gluten free meals, plus a lot of stalls sell fresh vegetables and fruits or nuts and candied fruit which are really awesome!
Here’s a list of some of the more snacky foods you can safely buy and eat and easily find in majane yehuda
Bamba – peanut-flavored morsel
Aproppo – corn-crispy snack
Dubonim – another great snack the kids will love.
HaShachar chocolate spread
Nutella chocolate spread
There are also various pastas, breads, and sweets that are gluten free: if the product you’re checking has ללא גלוטן (gluten free) on it, then it’s safe to eat. If you’re after even more sweets/snacks for the kids, watch out for items made by a company called Carmit, they have a whole range of goodies.
Another good option for gluten-free products in Israel is the firm Adittas, which has outlets throughout the country, but their main shop is located in Hangar 13 in Tel Aviv Port. Call them on 1-700-706-506 for details.
This is a list of the restaurants in Jerusalem that are known to serve gluten free meals
