I have rated this "excellent" because people should really see this ecological disaster ! There is a display room showing that this area used to be like Africa, teeming with luscious plants, wild animals, birds and fish. Now there's virtually nothing. The amazing thing is how recent the cause of this overpumping (water mainly to Amman) is : some 20... More

Azraq Wetland Reserve was once a flourishing oasis; home to thousands of migrating birds from Europe, on their journey to Africa. Now that the water has largely been depleted from over pumping there is little nature left among the handful of water buffalo that you are unlikely to see here. To date, the RSCN have attempted to conserve what is... More

We visited the Wetland Reserve at dusk after a long, hot day of castle-hopping in the desert. The kids loved running around the boardwalks and spotting birds. The set-up is lovely, shame that the wetlands are drying up and there aren't many birds to spot. Good toilets, and there is a lovely ecology display inside.

I visited Azraq wetlands on Friday 23 Jan for the first time in many years and despite rumours to the contrary I found it to have an abundance of water and wildlife including cootes who were like me enjoying the pleasant 19c and the gentle breeze rustling the water reeds . It is a tranquil and very relaxing place and... More

This is a wonderfully peaceful place worth a day trip from Amman. Can be also visited with a small kid and a buggy. The RSNC lodge that is close by provides great lunches if you book ahead.

Getting there includes comfortable highways as well as rather rough overland streets. Unless they stop the illegal wells that drain the water absolutely necessary for the place to survive, it will dry out and leave nothing but dusty areas, where 20 years ago there was still quite an ample marshland area. There are still fish and birds to be observed,... More

We got a guided tour of the reserve late afternoon in last few hours before sunset. We headed out in a safari viewing truck over the edge of the old wetlands, into an area of dry desert. There were lovely areas of black desert with wind polished ventifacts over the surface, giving a sort of shimmer in the low angled... More

Unfortunately this place is slowly dying year by year due to the water pumping. Just twenty years ago it was a big beautiful oasis in the surrounding desert. Now it looks like dried earth and a few ponds about few acres each only. There are some fishes and birds to watch however. We saw few egrets and some turtledoves. There... More
