Quite a long hot trip but still enjoyed the local experience.

We had seen everything we wanted to see in Yangon and thus time was not a concern for us. The station was an easy walk from our hotel, not very far from the Bogyoke Aung San market. You can go either clockwise or counterclockwise. I would just get tickets for the next train. Just be sure you get the right... More

Didn't expect to enjoy this trip seeing as we knew there was no AC and it was hot. But surprise surprise. Although we only stayed on for an hour...we enjoyed seeing the sights from the windows and meeting the locals who used the train. I struck up a conversation with a lovely young woman who was 7 months pregnant and... More

I really didn't think a slow 3/4 hour train, in tropical heat would turn out to be as interesting as it did. I arrived early and was expecting to catch the train that was travelling anti-clockwise, no such luck. A little tip, get on the first train as early as you can. It will be busier and more crampped but... More

If you have the time, some 12 hr, this is a great way to see the countryside, meet local people, see small cities (stops). Yes goes slow, but great way to see and enjoy the scenery. (cost: Upper Class $5.50) Take the day train North; yes it departs early 6:00 AM but a great introduction to Burma. Do not forget... More

Very very cheap and well wroth the experience. You will meet every type of Yangon citizen on board. Business People, farmers, workers students, market stall holders. Vendors selling beetle nut, Bananas, limes, sweets etc etc. Many varieties of smells (be warned). Takes 3-4 hrs. Well worth it to get a feel for local life and culture.

The circular train ride in Yangon was a highlight of our trip. It costs next to nothing and is a great way to see local life from your fellow passengers, on the sides of the railway line and at any of the stops you make. We only just caught our train as it had started to move and were hauled... More

I spent the 3 hours on the train journey around the city of Yangon and out in the surrounding areas. It's a great way to start discovering Yangon and the people. Be prepared for a basic journey as the train is very old but the experience is a eye opener. Take your camera and sense of humour and enjoy the... More
