Neighbourhood: Hongdae
Carefree enthusiasm is everywhere in this energetic neighborhood centered on Hongik University, Korea’s top art school. From its assortment of murals to the occasional amateur street performances, creativity and expression make up the wild and beating heart of vibrant Hongdae. At the Free and Hope Market (weekends at the Hongdae Children’s Playground) you'll find one of Seoul’s most popular handmade and creative markets drawing consistent crowds. At Hongdae, there’s never a shortage of things to do and see; food and drink options are nearly endless as are shops and noraebang (karaoke) rooms. Hongdae is also one of Seoul’s top party and club scenes catering to a younger demographic; if a packed club isn’t your scene, you'll also find a range of music venues and bars offering live music in all genres. Although Hongdae has lost much of its unique appeal and undergone rapid commercialization in recent years, be sure to explore Hongdae’s edges in areas such as Sangsu-dong and Yeonnam-dong where Hongdae’s fiercely independent streak still runs freely.

Hongdae is interesting as a fun and affordable student ghetto shopping area. The soldiers who are 19-20 year olds mingle with university female students, and young pop street performers are common. You can take line 1 or Seoul station two stops to 4 (Blue) Samgakji station to transfer to orange line 6 Sangsu station. (Exit 1 is at the intersection or cross the street from exits 3-4 escalators there). Three or so more stops (Sangsu) takes you to Hongdae or take bus 7011 Jungju on Dongmak-ro. From there, walk downhill on Wausan-ro. Bus 16 takes you closer to the head at Ol Cafe or the glass family Karaoke building. On foot, pass Gusto Taco and Nike to reach the sign to Hongik Univ. (Right). Another right at the Rooftop Camping jazz signs beside Hongik-ro 2-Gil reveals a busy Z Gen. strip of shoe stores and eats. (On the left side uphill toward the head of the street reveals clothing/apparel bazaar—split between men’s wear on the left and Women’s clothes on the right. Across from green Troubadour is a standup K-pop figure, JK’s Magic Shop (Jungkook). There’s also a Pop Mart across from Heuk Gwa Dang bubble tea and sitting in the Hollys Coffee above street entertainment affords a view up to H&M kitty corner from Footlocker.

Artsy place that has its own character and occasional buskers. Nice to walk, shop, eat and chill. I prefer this over the generic Myeongdong. Quite a number of restaurants, cafes and fashion stalls (personal favorites are Another Awesome, Fashionhong and Tomato Library)

The area is a bit small. A lot of buskers during the night. It is always crowded and happening. We spent few hours here. You can find lot of good restaurants too. Nice experience.

Grab a piece of art to take with you. Some real gems here. Don't leave without a visit. Pricing is very reasonable and in some cases cheap for what you get. Get an old woodblock print!

It is a really small flea market selling crafts and other knick-knacks. Luckily, it is located in an area which is waaaaaay more interesting.
I really do not have much to talk about this place really. I guess if you are within the vicinity, you can drop by for a quick visit.

The market was smaller than we expected with only around 20 -25 stalls on the day we visited. It’s in a very lively area with lots of shops and drinking places. Probably not worth a special trip but if you’re in the area...

First time here on a Chuseok holidays, I thought will be quiet but surprisingly NOT! The place is hip and happening with street performance about 5 different type to watch and support and you may tip them for some cash :) walk along the streets with so many ladies clothes, sports shops and also for guys. There's also street food as well. I am still feeling hungry, luckily there's a mall in Hongdae has Halal Guys for me to dine :P

I came to the location after 1 PM that’s when the information said that it “opened” - but found ... a regular street of shops and stalls, and a few “buskers,” but certainly nothing that wasn’t open an hour before. I wandered pretty extensively, so I’m confident I was in the right place, but unimpressed for an “art market.” Fun to wander, but not as an art market.

Hello, from the picture you uploaded, you are not visiting the HongdaeAp Artmarket FREEMARKET. The place you visited is Hongdae Street. You have to visit Hongik Culture Park. It's a shame that you couldn't meet us, even though you were willing to come.Thank you :)

Lots of things happening here - plenty of atmosphere- buskers, great shops food stalls and even nicer cafes (where you can actually sit!)
Good prices here as it is in a university area and caters for kids with not a lot of money.

Another gem provided by our driver. We met an artist who did wonderful oil paint reproductions of actual photographs for an very low cost. We visited the market in the afternoon and paintings of our three grandkids and two of my favorite airplanes were delivered to our hotel by seven in gathering evening. Lots of neat Korean art items.
