A drive through this area is most interesting. Unusual that people live among the tombs. If you're lucky you can visit a home here as some are gracious enough to show you where they live and guard the tombs.

At first when we visited this place , we were surprised and worried about the after life . An entire city with houses where tombstones and mummified bodies are kept of relatives of the home owners . Not for the faint hearted . The city also houses the low income group people as some stay in these houses with the... More

I went to visit the tomb of Muhamad Ali and his family and the 14 kings who reigned before him. It was desolate and quiet. The city of the Dead. Once in his tomb it was amazing. The hand crafted work on all the tombs and the building itself is absolutely breathtaking. Definitley visit, as this place had no tourists... More

A large sprawling cemetery inhabited by some of the poorest people in Cairo. You see it as you drive by the road.

DO NOT GO AT NIGHT. By day, there are 27,000 people living in amongst the tombs and the city has its own infrastructure. It's a city of the living as well as the dead.

I took a guided tour of this place which is the only way to really appreciate the history and wonder of the place. It is essentially a cemetery where nearly half a million people are still living and some of the most important historical buildings in Cairo.

This is a historical diamond in the rough but it is ignored by the government. There really is only one "tomb" that you can get access to but you need a guide who knows how to get you in to it. The rest of the city is walled in and not accessible. It could be so much better if it... More

i am intrigued by culture and have visited cemeteries and graveyards across the globe and i indulge myself because i like to understand the culture and the people. Cairo is no different. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. I admit it is not of interest to everyone but understanding a culture is a way forward for everyone and i felt this... More

I didnt realize that there were people living in this cemetery. And it just speaks to some of the economic conditions in Egypt
