I had an incredible time in Beijing but the Jiankou to Mutianyu Great Wall Hiking Tour stood out as the most amazing portion of the trip. We had 3 adults and one 8-year-old on our tour. The views were breathtaking. Mark, our guide, entertained and...More

I visited three sections of the wall - Badaling, Mutianyu and Jiankou. Jiankou was by far the best. You get to see the Wall in its rugged, unrestored beauty. I strongly recommend the 10 km Jiankou-Mutianyu hike as it allows you to see the best...More

Three of this did this walk the day after heavy rain. It was extremely slippery, and took a while to walk up from the village - over 2 hours until we reached the wall itself. The final section up was pretty hairy - okay if...More

Went to two different parts of the wall and really loved both. This one is ideal for those in shape!

What a beautiful and magnificent place this is. The wall was a lot steeper than I expected, but that added to the challenge of 'walking the wall'. If you are in China, you must visit this historic site. The wall can get very busy, we...More

Finding Jiankou can be a bit of a challenge for those not used to finding their own way, but it can be done. Lonely Planet has a quick guide, but basically you take Bus 916 from the main station in Beijing to Huairou. Most places...More

This is a fantastic part of the wall to walk - and you can walk from here to Mutianyu and then catch the chair down and get a ride back to city. HOWEVER, be careful and plan well how to get up onto the wall.....More

Jiankou to Mutianyu hike I hired a driver for 750RMB, left my hotel at 6:30am and made it to Jiankou Great Wall. Traffic was a pain as it was a holiday and a tonnnn of travelers. Our 2.5 hour drive to Jiankou turned into 4.5...More

No man has ever seen the complete wall of China. It's 5000 Kms long and in some places totally broken. This is the section where tourists go. I took the bus at 2 am and was there at 6 am which I thought was before...More

Is there a tour I could book as a single traveler for this section of the wall?

You can try Beijing Walking +86 13581665548. We used Leo to take us to JianKou and hike to Mutainyu. You can also do it as an unguided tour. Reasonable price and provides transportation from Beijing.
I have a layover at PEK from 2pm touchdown until 10am take off the following day. Is this a sufficient amount of time to get to the wall? See the wall? anything wall related? I've considered hiring a driver simply to go there and back just to take advantage of my time in Beijing. If anyone has suggestions on a workable way to squeeze this into a tight schedule, I'd greatly appreciate it.

It can be, depending on what form of transportation you can manage to arrange for the trip to the wall. Once st the wall you will want to spend a minimum 2 hours there. Have fun!

I would not know. I do not even know there is such a day tour. If there is such a day tour, I doubt it is legal. I would advise you to look into their legitimacy, insurance coverage, etc. Gratuities are normally not... More
