This two-story arched wooden structure once held 25 drums which, in combination with bells in the Bell Tower, were once used to indicate the time of day. Only one drum remains today, which is beaten four times a day for 15 minutes.

Very big Bell and Drum towers. All the bigger cities in China have them. I actually thought the ones in X'ian were nicer and made more of a feature of. I didn't go in as am aware of the standard fare inside and it was really busy plus there is a fee.

30 yuan entry charge ... walked past his huge building daily as our hotel was 2 hutongs away... and decided to go in days later... beware steep climb up 60+ stairs to the drums... no lifts. We didn't time our visit for the drumming ceremony ... and only heard them some distance away later.... but if you want to... get... More

You get a really good view from the Towers, but for us, the best is the two squares in between and to the north. And of course the hutongs around. Walk throug and explore.

Not really a place to visit, unless you are nearby. It is close to the hutongs, so we reached it by chance.

You need to be fairly fit to visit both towers as each has some serious steep steps. If you only do one, I recommend the drum tower. Make sure you are there when they are used (Just about every hour). Buy a through ticket for 30RMB if you decide to visit both. Incidentally the public loos next to the drum... More

These towers announced the open and closing of he old city gates. They now sit in a park filled with local people exercising and socializing.

The Drum Tower has been open for visits for some years but the Bell Tower was made accessible for visitors only in about 2015. These two buildings tower over Peking, on a north south axis with the forbidden city. Each marked points in the day. The Bell Tower is a sober, tiled roof brick structure. A very steep climb is... This is worth doing only to understand more of the heritage and history of the city. Do take the time to participate in the Tea Ceremony.
