We visited the Summer Palace as part of our tour. We happened to visit on a Sunday. It was certainly beautiful however so busy that you could not appreciate it. There were people everywhere. We were stuck in a line of traffic of people that you couldn't get out of.
Perhaps a week day would be less busy and allow you to enjoy it more.

Large park with lake, where you can hire small boats. A lot of people, but it does not bother as there is space. Nice place to hang around, there is also couple of restaurants. We visited quite briefly, walked through it and it took about an hour, plus the trip with metro.
Definitely worth visiting, despite of the long trip. You can get there with metro, just make sure you leave to right direction when getting on the street from metro, otherwise it will be a long walk around. When you come up to street and you are facing to street, leave left - the gate is just few hundred meters away.
Made this already 2019 but review was in draft for some reason.

The fresh air and the beautiful lake scenery just made it worthwhile. The gardens and the Summer Place were terrific, and the beauty of everything was better than picture-perfect.

In the palace itself there isn’t much to do except going up the long stairs and appreciate the views. Suggest comfortable shoes.

Really enjoyed walking around the summer palace with my wife. It was a bright winters day and it looked beautiful. There's lots to see and lots going on. Don't be afraid to have a sit and take in the scenery. Also don't be surprised if locals want photos with you if you aren't from China. Just embrace it and join in.

We saw it on a day with heavy smog....that kind of hampered the views. It’s still very beautiful. Very popular with Chinese tourists. Wee boat ride is lovely.

I will be staying around Forbidden City area. How long will it take to travel to Summer Palace from Forbidden City?

I can't remember how long it took, but my advise is the take the subway. It's the best way to get around Beijing. Auto traffic is congested, so taxi is not the best way.

Hi, I’m going there solo at the end of October and have limited time.
Is it advisable to buy a ticket online to save time, or is buying one on the spot just fine? Thanks!

We bought ours when we got there. Even at the height of tourist season, it only took a few minutes.

Staying at hotel close to forbidden city and will take a taxi to the summer palace, worried I will have a problem getting a taxi back to my hotel. Not interested in booking a tour, but concerned about being stranded at the Summer palace at the end of the day. Any suggestions?

Sorry for delay. No worry, you should take a hotel card with you and you will find taxis waiting when you leave palace. Always keep a hotel card in your wallet as people will always assist if you have written word. A lot gets lost in speech!

How do I get there using public transportation?

The easiest and cheapest way would be to take the Beijing Underground. You'll need to take Line 4 to Beigongmen Station, then exit via Exit D. There should be directions outside of the station that will point you towards the Summer Palace.

We are doing a private tour that includes a stop here early in the morning before the buildings are open. Will we be totally missing out by not getting inside the temple or any other buildings, or is the main feature of this place just walking around the scenic outside?

Out of all the places we have been to in Beijing my favorite was Summer Palace. You wouldn’t be able to see the beauty of it unless you go inside. I would also recommend to get an access to all of visiting places inside the palace as the total cost I believe was around 60 yuan which is very reasonable. We also took a boat tour inside the lake. Beijing is humongous and we ended up extending our trip as each places would take more time than I originally planned. Have fun.

Hi
You can buy your tickets at the North gate April-October it is 30 (CNY), November to March 20 (CNY). Not sure how much the child ticket is but you may be able to get a family ticket. So very worthwhile to spend the day there.
Good luck

Can we keep our luggage somewhere around this place?

I didn’t see lockers but the ticket office may keep it for a few Yuan.
Chinese travel with their luggage rather than leaving it at a hotel or airport or station and going back for it. They even take their luggage to restaurants. So worst case scenario you can carry your bags while visiting if they aren’t too big.

Necessary to engage tour guide for Summer palace? Or we can explore by ourselves? Thanks

Nope, no need for a tour guide. As stated there are audio guides you can rent but it is such a large place I would just use a map and do a little online research before arriving.
