We were very interested to experience traditional Peking opera and are glad we had the opportunity to. The Huguang Guild Hall has a 200-year history and is worth visiting. It is interesting to see that dancing and acting is given as much emphasis as singing, much different from Western opera. The costumes and makeup were amazingly detailed. It was also... More

Seriously thought this would be bad, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was really interesting, and they did it so that non-English speakers can understand what's going on. The theater itself was interesting also. If you want to get into the local culture, this is a great way to go. My young teenagers only sort of liked it though (but... More

Something like Peking Opera is bound to get mixed reviews which has probably nothing to do with the actual quality of the venue as a peking opera stage. Huguang Guild Hall is one of the most authentic ones in Beijing, and can be challenging for those who are not into arts and curious culture events. Makes me wonder why those... More

This show provides a useful insight into the magical and different world of Chinese Opera. The length of the show is just right - about 75mins with a short interval. this is better than having to sit through over 3 hours of a full opera and gives (I think) excerpts from other performances rather than a single story - but... Never been to a Peking opera before, we asked our hotel and were directed to Huguang Guild Hall. Built in 1807, it was the house of some high-ranking officials during the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) and the site where the Chinese Nationalist Party, Kuomintang, was declared by Sun Yat Sen on 25th Aug 1912 to take part in the... We were amazed by the performance, the costumes, the makeup and the building itself. Not all of our group wanted to see this but the ones that went were amazed. We did not know what to expect. The performers did an amazing job. I would recommend. Be prepared for the high pitched women's voices.

Nice old building, traditional performance. You are seated at the tables, serve tea with cookies and nut snacks before the performance. Not crowded. Relaxed atmosphere. Submerges you in ancient China. Easy to get to, not far from central area in Beijing, safe to walk around at night. We will go back if get chance to be in Beijing again.

An experience not to be missed when visiting Beijing. For those who do not understand the Chinese language there is an opening scene setting in English and throughout there are English comments at appropriate times without detracting from the opera. The performers were delightful to watch as were their very colourful costumes. Will visit again when next passing through Beijing.

An unbelievable experience. We went to the Opera on a very rainy Sunday evening only to discover that no one else in Beijing decided to brave the elements. But the show went on!! It is a very different Opera, and fascinating. The performance is only just over an hour and very physical...dancing, "fighting etc. We really enjoyed it and appreciated... More

This was an optional visit on our Viking Tour and we all found it a very different cultural experience. The performers and musicians gave us a wonderful insight into The Chinese culture.
