About
Hiking Mount Agung is a memorable experience—the active volcano is considered a sacred site, and the climb offers sweeping views of Bali. You can hike up to either the crater rim or the peak, the latter being the more challenging option. April to October offer the best conditions, with better visibility and less chance of rain. Hiring an experienced guide is a must, and climbers should have an adequate fitness level. Bring a headlamp and a trekking pole, and dress appropriately for cold conditions at the top. You’ll depart at midnight and aim to summit in time for sunrise. – Tripadvisor

My inaugural ascent of Mount Agung was a profoundly transformative experience, and I owe it all to Wayan and his exceptional team.

Gusti, my driver, was more than just a chauffeur; he was a cultural guide who made the four-hour round trip from my hotel to the trailhead an eye-opening journey. Gusti's punctuality and dedication to my comfort was unwavering. On the drive back, his engaging conversation and extensive knowledge about Bali and Indonesia were the highlights of my trip. I chose to stay wide awake, captivated by his words; sleep was simply out of the question.

Leni, my guide, was the cornerstone of my maiden climb. Her expertise was evident, but what truly set her apart was her patience and willingness to teach. Leni patiently shared fundamental climbing principles that empowered me as a novice. She knew when to encourage and when to let me catch my breath, instilling confidence with every step.

Wayan, the architect of this unforgettable adventure, meticulously planned every aspect of the journey. His team possesses a unique knack for turning first-time climbers into capable explorers.

For those contemplating the ascent of Mount Agung or an exploration of Bali's wonders, I wholeheartedly recommend Wayan and his remarkable team. They specialize in crafting experiences that offer safety, comfort, and cultural enrichment. To embark on your adventure, reach out to Wayan at +6282341344030. Thank you, Wayan, Gusti, and Leni, for etching my debut climb into my heart as a truly unforgettable experience!

Already to start the show at the top is magical, it is a personal experience to push its limits, but the ascent does it at its own pace.
Some tips:
1- Mandatory Guide: it is imperative to know and be accompanied!
2- make the ascent at night to arrive for the sunrise: already because the show is sublime and then because I imagine making this ascent in full sun, I have already sweated and sweated
In the middle of the night I imagine during the day...
3- leave equipped: do not hope to make the ascent with sneakers. Rocks and sand make you slide very quickly. So hiking shoes.
It is very cold at the top, so bonnet gloves, and windproof jacket are de rigueur.don’t hesitate to put on a technical tee shirt to keep the heat
4- it takes a physical condition: the ascent lasts between 4 and 6 hours and 3 hours of descent (harder than the climb). So asthmatics, overweight person, heart problem, fragile as a rule, go your way
5- do not take your children: the terrain is not at all safe, the descent is steep, my husband slipped and could have hurt himself very badly because once thrown nothing stops the fall.

Even if reading this message you are cold I assure you that it is a living experience, the guides know perfectly the terrain and know how to adapt to your pace. Breaks are frequent. Go well equipped, and this is a moment you will never forget

Hiked up Mount Agung’s crater rim with Wayan’s company and could not fault it. We were picked up at 11pm (staying at Seminyak) and arrived at the starting point at 1am. We started our ascent at 1:30am and arrived safely at 5:30am before the sunrise. Personally, the climb itself is mentally challenging as opposed to physical. The climb is broken down into 3 phases with the first phase being a steep walk through the woods/jungle which gradually turns into phase 2: rocky pathway. The final stage is the most arduous which required partial climbing if one is not familiar with rock face trekking. Fitness wise it’s a great workout but I’d suggest being mentally prepared at the gravity of it all as it becomes overwhelming with the steepness, lack of sleep and uncertainty of where the actual end point is. Sunrise was gorgeous with our guide offering coffee, tea, snacks and noodles. The descent can be a little tough on the knees but doable. We managed to arrive back on site in 3 hours and 30 minutes at a steady pace. Hiking pole, headlamp and gloves are provided. I’d strongly suggest to BYO gloves to protect you not just from the cold but for protection from the terrain. Bringing suitable outerwear and wearing appropriate footwear is also suggested as it gets quite cold and windy and the terrain is uneven and extremely rocky. Our guide spoke little English but paced himself to us and strategically moved up the mountain based on the most suitable ascent for our ability. I’d highly recommend this hike and Wayan’s company. Although it was difficult, it’s very rewarding once you’re back on land!

It was hard and unsafe and it would be good to have reviews of the tracks terrain in the description of the walk. Only for experienced mountain walkers as this was not a bushwalking track . We recommend going in July or thereabouts as you can see the sunrise as we did not see the sunrise and we are chasing the rain in December which makes it stressful. Thank you..

I hiked Mount Agung via the Pura Besakih trail last night unguided with my wife, After a pick-up from a private driver in Ubud around 22:30 (2nd of September 2024), we started at Pura Pengubengan temple. As we are experienced hikers and mountaineers, hiring a guide for this hike was not an option for us and according to our previous research, it is not officially needed. However, when we arrived at the entrance of the hiking trail (there is a small shelter close to the temple), unfortunately there was a bunch of criminals who were in charge of the entrance. When we communicated our plans and wanted to pay the official fee for foreigners (100k IDR) which was even written on a sign on the shelter, one guy told us that foreigners are not allowed to enter without guide and we have to pay 2 million IDR if we want to enter. Of course I declined this, but then the situation got significantly worse as around 8 people were standing around us and at least half of them pulled out their machetes and got closer to threaten us. One of them even grabbed my arm. To deescalate the situation, eventually we paid almost 1 million IDR for the two of us, which is 5 times the official price. The only reason to do so was to get out of this situation without any serious consequences. It seemed like these people were just waiting for us and perfectly prepared to threaten unguided foreigners and make use of the situation and their superior number.

After that, we climbed Mount Agung through the Pura Besakih trail. Even though there is some easy scrambling involved as well as a slightly exposed ridge to the summit, there is nothing to worry about for seasoned hikers. And a guide is certainly not necessary if you are experienced in the mountains. Interestingly, we saw lots of young Indonesian people unguided, most of them with a lack of proper equipment. Most likely we were the only unguided foreigners last night. The views from the top of Agung (Mount Rinjani, Agung crater and the Batur caldera) were outstanding, and usually this would be a five star review.

The Pura Pasar trail might be a better option for foreign unguided hikers, and there is a connection to the actual summit as well. However, we have not tried this hike. But most likely there will be more people, which might prevent such situations.

When we came back from our hike around 10am this morning, there was only one person in the shelter. It might be another option to start the hike at daytime and set up a camp somewhere along the way.

If you are struggling to decide if you should go like I was, read this.

I was trying to do research to see if we could do it and it was pretty much useless. So we decided to risk it and come back if we could not climb it.

For everyone’s reference, I do yoga 3x week. Used to be a runner but I have not trained this year. I also used to indoor rock climb but not lately.

We had a phenomenal tour guide that explained the entire route and what to do. Neither one of us was fit but we were the first ones to climb. He explained the technique and gave us advice the entire way up. The entire climb up took a little over 3 hours.

The first part was easy, like a walk through the woods, with elevation of course. At first I was scared going up because in my head it seemed like a vertical climb. At night you cannot really see much and because of the clouds, the trail is visually cut off.

I was terrified, and I am a rock climber (indoor though). But then going down I almost laughed at myself. It’s not that bad and you can always go on your behind and use your arms.

If we didn’t have such a phenomenal tour guide and a driver, it would’ve not been the same experience. Make sure you find someone really good that will not ruin this experience for you because I’ve heard stories from other people.

Made was not only caring and knowledgeable but has such a wonderful personality. Excellent English! He made us feel safe and helped me when needed. And also made the climb fun and insightful with stories around balinese culture. I would highly recommend going with him as you need a guide to go up and the price for the total package was I believe 750 per person but don’t quote me on that.

I booked my trek from Pura Pasar Agung temple to Mount Agung summit (3142m) with Wayan (+6282341344030) and thoroughly enjoyed the climb. Wayan was very attentive and responsive during the planning. He also agreed without hesitation to start the climb earlier with me as I was concerned that I wasn't physically strong enough to reach the summit before sunrise. In the end the extra time wasn't needed (lol) but this really shows that Wayan is dedicated to making sure that the climb was enjoyable and manageable for me.

To those who wish to trek mount Agung, I highly recommend you WhatsApp Wayan at +6282341344030.

My English is not very well but I still want to share this incredible experience with all of you. Long before going to Bali for vacation, I've heard about this highest mount in Bali called Mount Agung, a holy mountain for natives. I really like to take challenge so I decided to climb it. If you want to climb, I strongly recommend you to contact Wayan on whatshapp number +6282341344030, a super professional and warm guide.
What I want to emphasize is that Mount Agung is really hard for fresh climber, we chose a relative easier route(total two routes) which took us nearly 11 hours to climb up and down, from 1a.m. to 12a.m.. And there is no path after going through the jungle because its a valcano and there are rocks and rocks, you must be extremely cautious and careful!!!!
With the help of Wayan, We got to the top on 5:55 and at first we cannot see sunrise because of cloudy weather. Fortunately enough surrounding scenery became clear soon, and we can enjoy the splendid sunrise and huge crater of Agung. I would never forget the sense of achievement at that moment.
When climbing down, because Im too tired, Wayan help to take my backpack, he is so strong and familiar to this Mountain.

Aug 2023 • Family
We undertook the ascent of Mount Agung as a family: my husband and I (47 years old, rather sporty) and our 3 children aged 16, 13 and 10 years old. We are used to hiking in the mountains.
The experience was great but trying. We left at midnight with headlamps and had to take a very long break (=1h45, in addition to the short 15mins) before the summit because we had arrived too early for sunrise. Be careful, you get very cold during breaks. We had 4 “layers” with us (from a t-shirt to a special hiking kway, gloves, a hat) and my youngest was still cold. The climb to the summit is tiring but definitely doable if you are used to hiking in the mountains. Consider taking some sticks, it will really change things for you!!! Arriving at the top, it’s truly magnificent…. Everyone is amazed and very happy to have made it to the end…. Incredible, this sunrise above the clouds which floods the crater with its golden light!
Some groups following us stopped before the final summit because there is a path along a ridge which can be a little impressive but where there is no risk.
There is still a lot of wind and the temperature drops to 0.
The most difficult part is really the descent, very very long and slippery, where we fell several times. No serious risk but there is a risk of spraining your ankle or breaking your wrist. It took us longer to go down than to go up, although we barely took a break on the way back. 9h30 of walking in total without counting breaks for a difference in altitude of 2100m! The 8 liters we took were drunk without difficulty. As soon as we got in the car (11am), all 5 of us fell asleep immediately…
The next day, everyone was fine except me who could no longer go down the stairs, my thighs were too bruised!
Overall, we are extremely happy with this adventure and the children are proud of their performance. It’s a difficult but magnificent race!

I had a fantastic hike up Mount Agung with my guide Wayan Darta (+6282341344030) - timely pickup, hiking equipment provided, his team also started a campfire to keep us warm, food and coffee were also provided during the hike. Wayan’s team knows Mount Agung really well and I felt safe throughout the hike despite the terrain. Highly recommend Wayan Darta!
