Peranakan Tile Gallery and Yip Yew Chong's murals are a must-see!
Chinatown was still very quiet in May 2022 when I visited, not many tourists yet (I must say I like it that way - it was enjoyable to explore the area without crowds and countless stalls selling cheap trinkets). I visited Temple St for two main reasons: to see the Peranakan Tile Gallery at No. 36, and the beautiful nostalgic murals by Yip Yew Chong (check out his videos on YT and a map of mural locations all over Singapore). The Tile Gallery does not seem to have an entry on Trip Advisor but it definitely deserves one. The story of the gallery and its owner's search for and renovation of Peranakan tiles from old shophouses since the 1970's is unique (look it up!). You can see or buy antique tiles in the shop but also to buy high quality and inexpensive reproduction coasters. The painstaking process of tile renovation is also on display. I have attached a few photos.

    Murals
My favourite part of Temple Street was the murals. The Sri M Temple is actually on Pagoda St / South Bridge Road and backs on to Temple St, and there are no other temples on Temple St. My favourite part of Temple St was the murals, bright and colourful and pretty to see. Accessible all hours and free too. It’s part of the Chinatown area and doesn’t take long to visit.

Street with a temple, murals and some nice buildings
This is a street in Chinatown so named for the Hindu temple at the eastern end of the street. There’s some brightly coloured buildings and many murals around the street, but not much more so than around Chinatown. You’ll likely come across this street if walking around the Chinatown neighbourhood, but otherwise I wouldn’t go out of the way to see it.

One of the many streets of chinatown. This one allows cars so gets busy and noisy. Like other streets, a mix of old and new. You have modern ice cream cremery next to traditional dessert etc.

Temple street is famous for its shops supplying professional kitchen tools and crockery. Another interesting shop is Peranakan Tiles Gallery at No 36.
There is an outstanding mural here by Yip Yew Chong, "Cantonese Opera". The artist often watched Cantonese operas as a boy because they were staged frequently in Chinatown during the various Chinese festivals. He even brought his girlfriend to watch the operas on dates. The backdrop, props, lighting and the fighting scenes fascinated him and he has fond memories of all these which probably inspired his style of art. As for this mural, notice 1) the actors' and actresses' costumes 2) the various backstage activities 3) the spectators' postures and expressions 4) the mobile food stalls taking the opportunity of the crowd for businesses.
The artist has done a great credit in enhancing Chinatown culturally and making the streets more beautiful. These murals have delighted both locals and tourists alike.

Just within 5min walking distance from Chinatown MRT (Exit A), Temple Street (just beside the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple) has amazing wall murals that will capture your attention even from afar. Definitely great for anyone who likes to know a little more about the country and the local Chinese culture with some visuals. Great for photography as well.

This very old and busy street is famous for the biggest Hindu temple in Singapore. Beautiful colourful shop houses, local foods and culture some of the most unusual people we have seen in Singapore we meet here. The street is almost always decorated and night there is a night market. This place represents what Singapore is really like a mix of different cultures and traditions new and old.

The street name Temple refers to the Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore, which is located at the South Bridge Road end of the street. It was established in 1827 by Narayana Pillay, who came from Penang in the company of Stamford Raffles during the latter's second visit to Singapore in May 1819. Pillay's original business was destroyed by fire but with help from Raffles, he was soon back to his feet and moved to Commercial Square.
Temple Street was home to many Teochew traders who sold Chinaware and household items. There were also itinerant tinsmiths and metalware workshops as well as blacksmiths making horseshoes.
