Mega church vs traditional church
Jul 2023
William Shakespeare in Hamlet once said `There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy.' Even in the biblical world, things are also evolving fast beyond our prediction. In Singapore, orthodox and traditional denominational churches are losing their steam and appeal and many had witnessed a migration of their young followers to the modern mega churches. I had not attended Sunday services at any of the mega churches. There is this New Creation Church at Star Vista located beside the Buona Vista MRT. This morning, I decided to visit the church to attend their Sunday service and have a look of this mega church . It was a half hour walk from my house from Queenstown via the rail corridor. The Sunday service is held at the Performing Arts Theatre at the upper floor of Star Vista mall. The mall itself is non-air conditioned and eco-friendly and more than a dozen shops and eateries operated at the lower few floors making it very convenient and accessible for church goers to consume their breakfast or lunch before proceeding to attend the church services. There is also a CS Fresh supermarket and the eateries include the well-known Boon Tong Kee Chicken Rice, the Canton Paradise; Texas Chicken, Imakatsu, Akimitsu Ramen & Tendon, Crave, Nam Kee Pau, Four Leaves confectionary, etc. The traditional denominational churches tend to be standalone structures with no F & B amenities. I also noticed coffee carts at the lobby area and coffee and tea beverages are catered free for churchgoers. The coffee beverages include Black Coffee, Espresso, Americano, Cappuccino, Cafe Latte and Earl Grey or Apple Camomie Tea. I was shocked to see the crowd in the auditorium. The seating capacity of the theater is 5,000 people and almost every seat was occupied. The seats are comfortable and the stage was modern, lustrous and decorative. There were ushers standing by at the alleys to direct you to vacant seats as if I was coming for a cinema show or concert. The sound effect and acoustics were perfect and I really enjoyed listening to the songs and music. When Pastor Joseph Prince delivered his motivational sermons and conducted the healing sessions, the quality of the sound system was perfect and his voice was clear and charismatic. I was like an audience viewing a concert entertainment performance. The air-conditioned environment and the theatrical atmosphere and ambience made me very comfortable and relaxed. I was free to move about. There was no `harassment' or any one trying to force me to accept Christ with any persistent evangelistic effort. As a first time goer, I could easily discern the marked difference between a traditional denominational church and this mega church. Church services in commercial spaces, the theatrical performance arts atmosphere and ambience, the air-conditioned and conducive environment and the approach in sermons all contribute to the success factors of these mega churches.

Such a joy that Christmas fell on a Sunday! We attended the 2:30pm service and I left so thankful to be there. Lovely white haired ushers...very helpful. Amazing greeters, especially the gentleman with sclerosis who made all feel welcomed. And the Christmas show? Breathe-taking. Catch it on youtube!

There are few churches in Singapore that draw the crowds like this one. Most churches have to beg their members to come on time, or just come. Everything about this church spells excellence and class. Even the ushers have been elevated to ambassadors serving the King. Their service is seemless and flows smoothly. Their worship is very meaningful and passionate. JP and his advisors run a tight ship. They understand human psychology very well and use it to get the audience eating out of his hand, much like the Pied Piper of Hamlin. At the 2.30pm service I was caught by surprise because they screened a video of the earlier sermon. It was not live but recorded. I walked out immediately. The dynamics between a live and video sermon are worlds apart. It is an insult to the thousands who attend to not bother to preach in person. But as I mentioned earlier, he has found a way to get them all eating out of his hand. They have been brainwashed and programmed to the point that they can't tell the difference. If it is too tiring, get some other pastor to preach instead. But no, it must be the big man himself or else the crowds will soon disappear. So as much as he keeps saying he always points to Jesus, the reality is that he is using reverse psychology to trick the mind. He is subtly pointing to himself by saying we lift up Jesus. He knows how to manipulate and has mastered the fine art of herd mentality, without them knowing. By not preaching in person, it also smacks of arrogance and complacency. He would not have done this 10 or 15 years ago. But now success has got to his head. Look at other mega churches and study church history. You will see the same pattern. There are larger churches with more money and clout than NCC, and many of them fall from grace. It won't be a first neither the last. So lots of good and lots of bad here. Cheers.

Sermons are bible study sessions. Many references made to the bible. Seats are comfortable. Do bring a jacket as it’s rather cold. Services are throughout the day 8:30am, 11:30am, 2:30pm. I think there’s a 5:30pm service as well. Various locations depends on where is most convenient for you. North Buona Vista (live), Marina Bay Sands, Causeway Point and Great World” City. One of the Churches, one should visit. Great experience.

New creation church is one of the largest church in Singapore. The church compound is within a shopping mall where you can find a number of eateries. I’ve been here since the church started. One thing to note is that the parking fee is on the high side.

I have been attending NCC for 4 years now. Every week I am blessed by the messages from the pulpit. My life is transformed because of Jesus and because Jesus is preached every week and is exalted every week.

The church itself is using the auditorium located within the star vista mall. During weekdays, the auditorium can be rented for artists to held their concerts or shows. The building in itself is pretty interesting.

Have been attending the church from past two years.
Pastor Joseph Prince has been serving in this church.
Many food shops around so after/before the church service you can have food.
Walking distance from Buona Vista MRT(green/yellow line)

Timings for the church services in different languages can be checked on the church website.
