It was a 30 minutes walk from Stirling Road to the Alexandra Arch Bridge, I visited the Hort Park the previous day but that day, I decided to explore the Forest Walk stretching from the Alexandra Arch to the Henderson Waves. The directional sign on the metal bridge indicated that the distance is 2.1 km. I was curious as it was my very first forest walk in the Southern Ridges.

As I walked further in the metal bridges, the noisy car engines, the polluted exhaust fumes and the bustling traffic which is so characteristic of Alexandra Road suddenly went into silence. In the forest greenery surrounding me, I heard only the chirping of the birds and the buzzing of the cicada and the crickets. It was high up from the ground walking on the metal bridges and I felt nervous initially gripping with height phobia when looking down through the perforated gapholes of the metal bridge. I managed to pick up the courage after some distance as my fleeting mind calm down and my focus turned to the greenery and my breathing.

This is a gem in this urban island located right in the city area yet far from the madding crowd. One second, I was breathing in the toxic exhaust fumes from the zooming vehicles and the next moment I was surrounded by forest greenery and breathing in bountiful of negative ions.

I admired the occupants of those black and white bungalows in Preston Road who live so near to nature. There were informative signboards on the metal bridges introducing the various species of trees, shrubs, birds, bats that inhabited the forest. The Henderson Waves is iconic as it gives an aerial view of Telok Blangah and the vicinity. There was an entourage of Korean tourists who just arrived and were admiring the spectacular aerial view.

As a city dweller, I was always busy, anxious, worried and my life hectic . The mind is always preoccupied with work and materialistic gain. It is in this forest walk that one finds calmness in nature, and gain the courage to overcome the fear and the anxiety which plagued one's mind.

Southern Ridges comprise of Kent Ridge Park, Labrador Nature Reserve, Telok Blangah Hill Park and Mount Faber Park.
Exiting Kent Ridge mrt station, it is possible to access Kent Ridge Park, followed by Hortpark, Alexandra Arch, Forest Walk, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Henderson Waves and finally Mount Faber Park..
Alternatively, can focus on each park on a separate day depending on the weather.
Today, after parking at the carpark near Alkaff Mansion, (free parking), we walked towards the Forest Walk. It is a step-free elevated walkway about 1.3 km long. Along the way, we enjoyed the numerous Ketapang Trees with its vivid red hue leaves due to the build up of Xanthophyll pigments. It is our closest view of the autumn colours in Singapore. There are a few interpretative sign explaining the type of flora and fauna seen from this elevated walkway. At the end of this Forest Walk, we went down to do the Earth trail. We could access back to the Forest Walk by climbing some stairs. After that we adjourned to Wildseed Cafe at Alkaff mansion for breakfast. One can also enjoy sitting in the open air conservatory with a drink. The conservatory is shaded by a hugh tree creating a lovely ambience.

The Southern Ridges consists of 3 trails, 10 km in total, offering beautiful views of the vegetation, the forest and the peaks of the city.

The first footbridge is 300 meters long and perched at a height of 16 m and allows us to discover the fauna and flora of the canopy. The other footbridge is shaped like a wave which spans a road 36 m high and connects two hills and is also 300 meters long.

Once at the end of the footbridge, the road climbs left towards Mount Faber from where you can access other activities. The Mount Faber cable car leaves from up there by the way.

The walk is pleasant, perched up there, away from the noise of the road, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. When we went there, part of it was closed for renovation, so we had to go back down along the road to be able to take the trail again a little further. Everything is very well signposted, you can't miss the path.

Allow 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes. Free access, footbridge illuminated at night.

On the southern side of Singapore are a serious of hills and ridges that are connected by a walking trail that is a feature of its own. The trail is well done with state of the art features, like the Henderson Wave. However, for me it was the views that were simply amazing. My wife and I love to find great walks for exercise and adventure when we travel. This offers both and is very enjoyable.

This was my third time to Singapore and I had not been to this area yet.
This was totally unexpected and a very unique experience in a big city. We started our hike at the HarbourFront / Sentosa / VivoCity area (at Marang Road there is a trail entrance adjacent to the motorcycle parking lot), then hiked up, up, up to Faber Peak (through Mount Faber Park), and then across to Henderson Waves Bridge to Telok Blangah Hill Park, which connects to Southern Ridges, then across the raised platform trail, and we ended our hike at the Alexandra Road Bridge (near Hyderabad Road at the Jain School of Management). Being a civil engineer the bridges and raised platform walkways were very interesting. The design, architecture, and engineering really work will in the natural setting and with the steep topography of the land. Great views of the city. I'm not positive, but I think we probably walked 4 or 5 kilometers and took about 90 minutes.

What a lovely little walk! We climbed the stairs between Hort Park and the Southern Ridges then did the suspended walkway through to Telok Blangah Hill Park. The walkway takes around 20-30 mins with a slight uphill grade with plenty of shade along the way, although no seats. It's a chance to check out various trees along the way and be entertained by scampering squirrels. At the end of the walk disregard the signposted map that has you walking downhill for some distance to the bottom entrance of the terraced gardens, instead turn right then walk up the short (though steep) access road that puts you out on top where a shaded pergola sits for you to enjoy the view of the very pretty bougainvillea filled gardens below.
Once you walk down through the gardens there are very clean public toilets and a cheap drink vending machine a short distance down the road.

Great hike from Henderson Waves (Mount Faber) to Kent Ridge across metal walkways and treetops. I would skip this hike during rain because the metal walkways get very slippery, and being surrounded by all metal in the treetops probably isn’t safe in a thunderstorm, but otherwise it’s a very pleasant and scenic height. If you go from end to end, it’s approximately 5k (including the Canopy Walk at Kent Ridge).

For those who want to hike without experiencing a rugged terrain should visit this 10km trail. Trail connects Mount Faber and West Coast. Great vantage points of the city and the Southern Islands.

The whole route (Starting from Haw Par Villa), ending at Mt Faber is fabulous and make for the worlds greatest beer at Arboria (Food there excellent as well and nod to Bob, one of the nicest friendlest barmen there is) at the end followed by the walk back down to the harbourfront MRT.

Also done just the Henderson waves bit ending at Mt Faber. Dont forget The Alkaff mansions and a quick detour up to the the top of Telok Blangah Hill Park at the start and the merlion and Mt Faber Hilltop View at the end.

The Telok Blangah Hill Park, part of the Southern Ridges, contains an incredibly well-maintained beautiful garden with semi-circular terraces. This is truly a breath-taking garden and well worth the hiking the trail to these gardens. Reaching and touring this garden can be a bit strenuous, especially in the hot and humid tropical climate of Singapore but on the bright side the number of visitors is quite sparse, so crowded conditions are not an issue.
