About
Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene in the cosmopolitan city-state. In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings. The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-of-the-art Esplanade Concert Hall. More intimate works and all outreach and community performances take place at the 673-seat Victoria Concert Hall, the home of the SSO. The orchestra performs 100 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans all time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres.

Leading symphony orchestras in the region can be an enjoyable experience. My own experience is with Bangkok and Singapore. Levels of ensemble tend to be very high. Ticket prices at the Esplanade are reasonable, and the hall is a very pleasant venue (and a nice complement to the hall in the Thailand Cultural Centre, if one has not attended events in both venues).

We have been lucky enough to attend concerts here since the 90's and enjoyed the recent Bruckner 8th Symphony and yes three harps and the Wagner tubas.
The guest artist was a local musician and the Mozart Piano Concerto no 14 was ably played.
We were surprised that although it was difficult to get one of the better seats, there were a lot of empty seats -they deserve an audience.

While I was in Singapore, I got the chance to see the SSO perform works by Haydn and Brahms, under the direction of Claus Peter Flor, the orchestra was truly magnificent and the Victoria Concert Hall had great acoustics. I also have on my iPod a recording of the SSO under their current music director, Lan Shui, which features violinist Gil Shaham performing in both the Tchaikovsky violin concerto and a work called "The Butterfly Lovers" based on Chinese folk tales. The SSO can truly hold its own with any of the major American or European ensembles, and you should definitely check them out when you come to Singapore.

Nice architecture, outside and inside, transporting you for a couple of hours outside the busy urban Singapore.
Great orchestra playing under the direction of a German pianist and conductor for a nice evening of classical music in family.
The concert hall was conceived at a human size (1800 seats I believe), so the atmosphere is rather intimate.
A pleasant and peaceful moment.

While staying overnight in Singapore we were fortunate to catch this wonderful orchestra playing at the Victoria Hall, a beautiful concert hall. The guest pianist was Christian Blackshaw who was magnificent. The orchestra's playing of Brahm's 3rd was powerful. We were so impressed that we have booked to see them again at The Esplanade Theatre when we return to Singapore in 2 weeks.
