It is believed that the design was modelled after “Cleopatra’s Needle” on the Thames Embankment in London, which might explain the British influences in its tall, needle-like architectural structure.

Not worth a special trip

If in the area it's worth stopping and taking a few photos but I wouldn't go out of my way for a special trip for this site.

The renovations of the obelisk and the vicinity now seem more or less complete and it's possible to actually get up close to it and read the signs. A quick visit suffices.

If your passing - take a quick look. The Ramsey family - the Marquis of Dalhousie played an important part in the expansion of the Empire in the 1800's. He was Governor General of British India. There are a few plaques reflecting his achievements.

Small obelisk in the downtown area. Ok to visit if you are in the Fullerton hotel area but not worth taking a special visit to come see it.

Located close to the Victoria Concert Hall, this small monument is worth a stop as you explore the area. One of the older structures in Singapore so it's certainly worth a quick stop.

The "Dalhousie Obelisk" was built to commemorate the second visit to Singapore, in February 1850, of the Marquis of Dalhousie, who was the Governor-General of India from 1848 to 1856. It is a memorial obelisk and is situated at Empress Place, near the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall, and the Anderson Bridge near the mouth of the Singapore River. This... More

The obelisk looks neat, and is worth a five minute look if you are in the area. However, there's not enough to see to bother devoting more time than that. It is part of one of Singapore's many heritage trails though, so people in the area can use the maps to guide them to other nearby attractions.

I just happen to pass by this place when going near the empress place building and esplanade park. Good to be able to capture some pictures at night. Unlit at night, light comes from nearby street lights. Not sure why this thing existed, just make the place nicer, I guess. Already declared a monument in Singapore.

This is one of those monuments-features which help to make a community nicer. It might be a "must-visit destination attraction" for few. But it very nicely adds to the atmosphere, the vibe, of a place.
