Great place to walk around and enjoy the old with the new. Many local restaurants up and down Joo Chiat road. And day time has a VERY different atmosphere than a night.

The Joo Chiat area is another well-preserved Peranakan district of Singapore where a multi-cultural mix of Malay, Chinese, Eurasians and expatriates reside. We strolled past many colourful heritage (pre-war architecture), two-storey shophouses, quaint stores, terraced homes and eateries with ornate facades, intricate motifs and colourful ceramic tiles. There are also great eateries in this area.

Can't miss the multi-coloured double-storey terrace houses with traditional Peranakan style at Koon Seng Road.I'm lucky to live this beautiful and charming area.Every time I pass by those shophouses.I feel like touching local history along with the sweetest fragrance of plumeria in the town.

Dined at this compact food hall with my local friend and his family last night (Sunday) and again for coffee this morning. It was busy with tables turning over regularly. The food hall is on the corner of Joo Chiat and Dunmoon Rds.- there are five stalls with a wide range of choices at really good prices - thoroughly enjoyed... More

I saw the photos on TA and decided it's a worth a stop for the contrasting colors of old Singapore. It's probably worth a read on wiki before you head there as you might appreciate it more when you see it in person. I wish there was some sort of plaque that introduces the history of this area. The colored... More

Joo Chiat / Katong is a district north east of Singapore City that is home to the Peranakans. The Peranakans are descendants of Chinese who migrated to Singapore from the 15th century onwards. They have developed their own distinct and unique and eclectic culture and cuisine, and in the meantime became prosperous and respected members of the establishment. In the... More

A great history lesson. The Dutch used to charge tax based on the width of structures so the residents of this area created this unique style of open-air housing. It was great finding the different plaques hanging with the historical info displayed around the neighborhood.

Highly recommend to those who loves history and architecture. The area has well preserved rows of peranakan shophouses to entertain the eyes. Just wandering around the area require about 1 or 2 hours at least.

Joo Chiat
The Joo Chiat area is the traditional home of Peranakan culture in Singapore, an ethnic group descending from the blending of Chinese and Malay families in the 15th century. The neighbourhood is packed with colourful shops, local characters, and quiet charm. The main streets overflow with diners enjoying katong laksa, the signature Peranakan spicy noodle soup. Signs of youthful entrepreneurship are visible as well, with modern cafes, bars, and shops abounding.
